Technical / NWN2 2DA Information

2DA files (.2da) are used to store game information for the Neverwinter Nights CRPG engine, typically information relating to game rules. The term 2DA stands for Two Dimensional Array and information within these files is expressly designed to be modifiable. Anyone with a simple text editor like Notepad can edit a 2DA file, provided they understand the formatting conventions.

The contents of all 2DA files are loaded by the game at startup. These files are located in the 2DA.zip file within the Data game folder. They can be overridden by placing custom versions in the Override game folder or in a Hak file. There are also scripting functions available to access 2DA files, but it is not recommended for real time scripting as disk access is far slower than direct memory access. If you need data contained in a 2DA file for scripting purposes, it's probably best to cache the information on local variables in the module load event handler.
