Programs to ease player client file configuration?

Post by AcadiusLost »

Seems to me we've seen 2 programs written for this purpose so far: Audolo and Worldgate. I believe we should try to get one of these set up for ALFA's haks and pwcs, otherwise we're going to find the NWN2 experience for players being a tangled path through the forest just to get connected for the first time- especially as we add DMFI and custom tlk files.

Players will likely need:
1. ALFA's haks, unRAR'ed and placed in their /documents/nwn2/hak/ folder
2. ALFA's tlk, unRAR'ed and placed in their /documents/nwn2/tlk/ folder
3. ALFA's version of the DMFI UI, in their /documents/nwn2/ui/custom/ folder
4. the DMFI's "ingameguix1.ini", in their /documents/nwn2/ui/default/ folder
5. the unRAR'd and current pwc file for each and every server they will play on, in their /documents/nwn2/pwc folder.

Add to that the fact that the haks will be changing (without changing names) as we add content, as will the PWC files with module updates... we really need a way to keep everything straight.

Actually, if anyone is savvy with writing simple .exe launchers/installers for windows, we might even be able to sneak around the "no haks loaded on character creation" by copying the 2das into the override folder before launching the game to enter an ALFA server, though the program would have to remove them again after the game shut down. Coming to think of it, since one can also just quit to main menu, then join other (non-ALFA) servers, it's probably not feasible- in those cases the override would still end up interfering with other gameplay.

Anyone have experience using or setting up either of the above programs, or heard of one better? I know indio had Worldgate set up for TSF at one time, so maybe that's the best place to start?

I have been using Worldgate for NWN2 PWs with great ease.

It also seems to be "industry standard" now.

I would recommend it....although I don't know of much else.

I've used both, briefly. Audulo is odd in that it downloads a whole folder of .tr* files, prefabs and all sorts. Can't add any more useful info as investigating the server side is still on my to-do list.

Sounds like the preference is for Worldgate at this point, I'll see what I can dig up on the serverside part of it before the NWN2 Team meeting this weekend.

Worldgate is actually great software that puts everything where it needs to go with a minumim of fuss. Easy for builders and easy for players. Takes a little getting used to, but absolutely worth it.

We had some tething problems AL...I'm sure you recall them. But for 90% of the players after that initial bump, it worked perfectly.

There is an issue with pasting the host address in the player client....pasting won't work, but typing the address does.

I have installed it for ALFA.

Details for client setting are here:
http://www.alandfaraway.org/phpbbforum/ ... 018#448018

Please note that the haks there are the very last ones (ie the ones AcadiusLost uses on his test server).

I'll post the details on how to use the admin part on the DM forum.

When everything is ready I'll post here again.

About, Indio's remark: what we could do is give a .ini file for Worldgate for our players so that they won't need to configure it.
We could also offer a zip with worldgate client and the .ini file for ALFA.

I think we have this working now, thanks to Hialmar's speedy efforts.

To configure the player client, hit "From URL", and give it www.alandfaraway.org - the rest should happen pretty automatically.

Currently that should give you:
1. NWN2 ALFA haks
2. MotB-compatible DMFI UI
3. PWC file for the OAS2

(can add more PWC files as we get more betas hosted)
