Bard Mechanics/Possible Bug.

It seems that having ANY ranks in a Perform: Instrument skill REQUIRES a bard to be using that instrument to use the bard abilities.

Example:

A bard with 4 points allotted in Oratory has no problem being a bard.

A bard with 4 points allotted in Oratory and 2 points allotted in Strings cant be a bard without an lute in his hand and even then he cant be a bard as he doesnt have the minimum 3 points in Peform.

Bug? Feature? Intended? Make sense?

Actually, I dont know how it works (or breaks).

I just tried 4 ranks in Oratory with 4 ranks in Strings AND 4 ranks in Sing with 4 ranks in String...neither worked with bard songs, with or without a lute in hand.

In IRC I got the impression from Curm that AcadiusLost had given some kind of explanation call it a month ago when someone else was trying to figure out how to get a bard 1 to do some stuff... maybe AL will remember if this is the case and share tips?

Old recurrent bug; When you go through the "adaption" process/convo on entry to the module with a new PC, it's supposed to scan through all your Perform subskills and determine the highest, then adjust your hidden OEI "Perform" skill to match for purposes of inspirations.

However, this operation fails to occur in some instances, particularly if no skills are adjusted via the adaption convo. Should be fixable without too much trouble, just keeps getting forgotten about.

The problem is self-correcting to a certain extent, in that the Level Up event re-runs the check and adjustment in order to account for new points invested in Perform subskills. In the meantime, a minor bic edit to adjust the base skill rank of the hidden OEI perform skill should put you to rights for the remainder of 1st level.

If there is a current/alive/active PC who needs this fixed, please let me know in IRC or via forum PM, and I'll do the requisite edit.

Here is the work around:

Do not put ANY skill points in ANY perform skill in the character creation; instead, dump those skill points you want for perform skills into something else. Once you have clicked 'finish' and logged into the game, youll be prompted to finalize skill points or to adjust skill distrubutions - NOW is when you adjust your skillpoints. Remove the skill points you placed into dummy skills using the prompts, then place those points into your desired perform skills. Viola!, your bard should now be working properly.

Thanks goes to Matti for the help in figuring this out.

Good find; added it to our Bard and Skill Changes pages.

I am trying to figure out if the "viola!" was a very bad bard joke.

What's the difference between a violin and a viola?

1) The viola burns longer.
2) The viola holds more beer.
3) You can tune the violin.

*gasp!*

... why would you ruin perfectly-good beer like that!

Q: What's the difference between a viola and an onion?

A: No one cries when you chop up a viola.

Thank you very much. We'll be here all week.

Just to show I'm not prejudiced, but hold all musicians in equal disregard...

Q. What's the difference between a violin and a viola?

A. There is no difference. The violin just looks smaller because the violinist's head is so much bigger.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q. What's the difference between a fiddle and a violin?
A. No-one minds if you spill beer on a fiddle.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Q. What's the difference between a violin and a fiddle?

A. A fiddle is fun to listen to.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q. Why was the piano invented?
A. So the musician would have a place to put his beer.
I do believe this is the case. Worked just fine for me as well. I think it's because ALFA has met it's bard quota....
