A Land Far Away

Well that was a bit of a bummer.

I tried to play ALFA (Beta 1 server) for the first time 2 minutes ago, and I got the following message after character creation: "Error loading the module, could not load the module."

So I immediately get suspicious about my haks. My questions are: Do I need ANY other haks or custom content files to play ALFA, except the ones that can be downloaded via the NWN2 haks page? Those I have now (meaning the one package of about 50 megs). And, can there be any other hak files in the folder at the time? I think I might have one other hak file there.

Are there any known reason why this happened? And finally, what should I do?

If the message was nonspecific, you were most likely just missing the pwc file. PWCs may be updated fairly regularly, depending on how active the builder(s) is/are.

We're currently trying to get the ACR updated for our NWN2 servers, so one of the haks will likely be changing in the next few days. The current list of required haks looks like this:

alfa_2da.hak
alfa_acr01.hak
alfa_fx.hak
alfa_gui.hak
alfa_items.hak
alfa_placeables.hak
alfa_terrain.hak
alfa_tiles.hak

They should all be in your /hak directory (in the "My Documents" arm of the install). It doesn't matter if you have extra haks in there, your client only tries to load the haks the module asks for.

If you have anything in your Override folders, those may interfere with playing on ALFA, as they take priority over haks.

The pwc files are server-specific, and work in the same way- doesn't matter how many you have, only matters if you have the one the server is looking for. I'm going to guess you were trying to connect to ALFA 003 The Savage Frontier - as it's our most consistently hosted NWN2 module. The PWC for that one is a 5-part download- put all the parts in the same folder, then use winRAR or 7zip to unpack the first one, it should compose them all into a big 339 megabyte .pwc file. This goes in your ("my documents" /pwc folder.

We're working on getting some automated clients set up to help people get, and remain up to date with haks and PWC files without having to do this manually all the time, but you're a bit ahead of the curve for that currently. Hopefully we'll soon settle into a consistent set of haks at least.
