Welcome. Think I saw you drop into #alfa-players already, you may want to pick the first server you try out in part based on feedback you'll get there for "what servers seem most active in your timezone", everything has peaks and valleys, for the best possible experience, pick where people are playing, and take pains to meet up and get oriented, into some RP, etc.
While fairly different regions of the imagined world of Faerun are represented in ALFA, odds and ends background knowledge "shortcomings" are not a big deal, if you wanted to have like, deep, rich background, I guess that's where google comes in, or things like the Forgotten Realms Wiki (which is sometimes updated to periods of time "way after" when we're playing), to look up things like cities or villages or forests or whatever. So you can say "ah, now I know why people are talking about a Confederacy in the North" or "so I guess Baldur's Gate has four dukes, and one owns a huge mercenary company which explains all these soldiers with the name "Flaming Fist" on them..."
