Spurious/Non-associative IG DM Tags
Is there a policy regarding in-game DM tag nomenclature which encourages consistency and ease of association to a forum personality (for the purposes of plot PMs, for example)?

90% of DMs do use their Forum name (or a derivative of it) for their Avatar names anyhow.
Also, it's not unusual for DMs to log in and not want to be disturbed, often the unusual names chosen are and indication of such I've found.

<Heero>: yeah for every pc ronan has killed dming, paazin has killed 2 with his spawns

Another complicating matter is that sometimes DM avatars are rendered useless and crash upon logging in, which often enough is most easily settled by DMs rolling new ones.
The power of concealment lies in revelation.

All of the above strike me as being fairly minor issues that shouldn't get in the way of an associative tag, e.g., DM_<forum name>[<scaling number>][_DnD].

Then I suggest you suggest it to DMA
If it's made a rule, then it might happen, otherwise many will probably make whatever name they are most happy with

Can't be bothered with ALFA bureaucracy, I just play the game. Mentioning the thought here should be good enough... [edit:] ...to canvas general opinion.

I used "*" and any variation because it creates immersion and I often get confused with my copious NPC dialog if "where" I am. It helps also when emoting to the server and in larger areas.
It also helps a Dm with issues of favoritism and being bothered while they are working or prepping or testing. OR if they play a specific NPC as the DM.
As far as issues with "who is that Dm?" Server logs say EXACTLY whose IP logs in and out. So if you have an issue with a unknown DM, you can bring it to an AR or the HDM, give them the time frame, and make a complaint. It shows your login to Gamespy as well when you log in on the logs. And the server is set only to allow people with your specfic callsign/login as it is WITH the password.
We managed in NWN never knowing when the Dms are on, I think its a useful tool.

i don't think the complaint? suggestion? question? is about what dm's name themselves, but how do you tell dm a apart from dm b... as a math professor of mine told long time ago - you can name all variables x, as long as you can tell them apart it's fine!
i've ran into it couple times, you've just been in dm'd event, but you have no idea who the dm was... it get's a bit confusing for any followup, etc.... that's all... if the intent was to have one time mystery session - by all means. other than that players really have no way of knowing who dm's them...

*scratches head* PM the DM in game if you're not sure who it is?

DMs should have the latitude to name their avatars however they wish. If a DM wishes to make their identity known to a player, they will respond with such upon the player's request or adopt a unique identifiable avatar name.
If you want to know who a DM is, just ask. If you don't get an answer, well that means something too.

Or ask one of your fellow players. Most people get to know the DMs to the point that they recognize them by style alone.
Current PCs:
Zova Earth Breaker, Monk of Rasheman
Alyra Ashedown, Knight Commander of Silverymoon

Follow-up is the point, Dirsa, yes.
The general solution appears to be to repeatedly /t DMs and players in an effort to decode the encrypted DM tag of the moment - and yes these coded names seem to change fairly regularly thus 'repeatedly'. Bizarre.

lol
Just...ask. We have a grand total of like 5 active DMs here.
Personally, I wish we could have stealth DM login back, like in nwn1.
