Rekindle that idea: NWN2 for new members

Post by boombrakh »

So, i've been down this road before and it had mixed reactions among the members. Not letting that dissuade me though, I've gone ahead and started without anyone else.

Here is the general idea:
Today, we mostly rely on existing members from other NWN2 communities for new members. Our advertisement is focused on re-directing interest from other places to us. I want to start attracting people who has no prior experience with NWN2 and who are not already set in their preferred PW. To do this, we add a part to the application process where the applicant check a box if they already own NWN2 or not and if not, they will get a copy from us upon being an accepted member. The game is $20 with all the expansions and if people donate, then buying a copy or two a month isn't that hard. Any changes in the application process where we hand out a copy of the game, I leave to the PA, but we might need to raise the bar a bit if membership comes with free loot.

I've gone ahead and bought my first copy of NWN2 and I'll be sending the Gift Certificate Code to Hialmar for safe keeping. And because I wasn't paying attention, this code also comes with a free copy of "The Witcher: Enhanced Edition" so.. congrats to whomever we give that to. I'll buy another copy next month. I don't know if we can use the existing PayPal account Hialmar has for this or if we should setup a new one, but anyways..

Let's look for new talents, not just old ones.

pragmatic (adj.)
The opposite of idealistic is pragmatic, a word that describes a philosophy of "doing what works best."
From Greek pragma "deed," the word has historically described philosophers and politicians who were
concerned more with real-world application of ideas than with abstract notions. A pragmatic person
is sensible, grounded, and practical.

Here is another debated idea I proposed:

A. Don't hijack your own thread

B. Original post is a fantastic idea that I would happily offer what resources I have to support.

Thank you for your support Maxcell. I really like the idea because it puts ALFA in the lead ahead of other NWN2 communities as well as show that we are not confined within our own four walls.

The only thing I find problematic at this point is teaching new players how to make NWN2 work and making sure they buy the ABSOLUTE newest version since it no longer self-patches. Then making sure they get Skywing set up. It takes a good deal of patience and dedication.

Is this even true with games bought through digital media such as gog.com?

Maybe. They need to check, or we need to find reliable sources of patches. Preferably both. You need both expansions and NWN2 upgraded to 1.23 to play here, and NWN2 will plainly kick you out if you don't have that, and we'd have to prepare people for the "the thing that comes out of the box won't work for multiplayer" thing. It's not insurmountable, but the complete lack of official support means that there's a learning curve to overcome (and we'd be well-served to plan to overcome it).

Yes, GOG NWN2 works just fine.

With my old discs broken, I bought the gog version. Works from the start and includes everything.
First Character: Zyrus Meynolt, the serene Water Genasi berserker. "I am the embodiment of the oceans; serene until you summon the storm." Zyrus: http://tinyurl.com/9emdbnd

Second Character: Damien Collins, the atypical druid. "What? Being a stick in the mud is boring. No pun intended grins"

Western Heartlands HDM: On break. PM for emergencies

Yeah, GoG for the win. I picked up a GoG version even though my discs still work - the convenience is just hard to beat.

Also, boom is kinda cute. I must admit I want to rub his belly, ostensibly for good luck, but really just because I want to.

Cheers,

Ah, Boom. Your verbose and pedantic nature has proved to have earned you a modicum of perceptive animosity. I am more than galvanized to participate in such a fulfilling and self evolving growth of our enthusiastic undertaking.

Cheers,

I support Boom's position. We need to make it easy for prospects to get in game. Linking teh GOG version has my approval.

Who edits the website, we are badly in need of some edits to it.
