I don't get it. I mean, he opposes moderation and can't even do anything about it, aside from voice his opinion. Should he not even be on the ballot? Why give people the choice. . ? Anyway, I voted for GF. I hope he gets rid of that awful moderation because it seems like we lose members just as quickly as we did with out it. It's a problem with ALFA not attitude. I played on this place called Battledale, a bunch of mean spirited pricks they were, in fact, pre-moderated ALFA couldn't fucking compete on their level of prickitude but it was popular because it was fun and engaging. Perhaps you should focus on that instead of bitching about each other.

The part you're missing was likely moderated.HATEFACE wrote:I don't get it.

The biggest hurdle to retention is the difficulty in finding game. We intentionally minimize rewards from non-DMd activities believing that most xp should come from a DM, but then at the same time cannot maintain a significant DMing presence. The net result for most people is that there is no point and they go on to greener pastures. Basically, our model and self-perception seems fundamentally flawed.

Completely fluff. They're a delusional bunch, they are. Got a bloody scrape on your elbow? Place a bandaid on your forehead. It makes perfect sense in ALFA logic.

Therin lies the Rub.
Ironically, if you love DMing it is quite possible to do so without visiting the forums, except for the specific server forum section and the DM boards.
It seems odd to me then that people who want to DM cite the constant bickering on the forums as their reason for quitting.
Also ironic, the only real bickering going on here at the moment is about the Moderating that was supposed to make the forums a better place. Ho hum.

Well we all think we're right don't we?
I agree that static content and boredom are reasons for departure.
The fact is, in a democracy the majority rules. The majority appears to want the moderation. In the past the majority did not support the moderation, evident from its failure. Things change, apparently the population has shifted in favor of moderation.
The "drama" about moderation has not come about because of the supporters of moderation, it is the back lash from folks that feel entitled to behave in a fashion the majority does not condone.
Your peers have spoken, you will either win your "war" and cause some of us to leave, I will leave if the moderation fails, so add me to that list, or you will fail...if you fail to "over throw the establishment" will you leave? or work with us to create more static content?

Ain't it though Mayhem? Forums are required for discussion and moving things forward. It would be nice to focus just on the game but lets not fool ourselves. I'll argue against moderation until my fingers turn blue and fall off. You pro-moderation guys will do the same. You know what? It's easier to vote. Set priorties. Focus on game fixes, help the community as Danubus is doing, after that, you're free to tear each other's throats out, complain, whine, moan, and bring up old dead horses as if they serve some relevance until the cows come home.
You guys aren't 'helping' the community any by causing newbies to leave by attacking their playstyle. I'm bringing that up because I am upset by it. Its the type of elitist bullshit that isn't required. It was the first newbie in a long while and ONLY ALFA manages to fuck it up.
. . .and now we got GF, who, by all acounts, isn't even back from his european trip, is underfire because he can't technically do anything about moderation. GrandFromage has done a lot for this community and his voice and opinion carries some weight and that is a threat. Here lies the controversy with him. It isn't due some bullshit argument that he "may" use whatever power he has as a position of PA to overturn moderation. It's because he holds a different opinion and other power players in ALFA don't like it.
Edit: I don't know if I'm right Nalo but I can state my opinion all the same.
. . .and you might have noticed that despite moderation, I haven't left ALFA nor would I use leaving ALFA as an aid in pandering some sort of agenda. Be it pro or con.

Moderation is not a yes/no issue, and we don't really know where the "majority" stands, though they've often been "spoken for" by extremes on both sides. I believe the majority favors some level of moderation, but what we've got at the moment is a particularly vocal anti-moderation contingent who are battling with a push for stronger moderation. Both sides want to quell the other, so escalation occurs, which mostly just upsets the folks in the middle with both the extremes. Focusing on the game, building, DMing, and playing is the best medicine in my opinion.

Not leaving to pander a concept mate. I would leave because I have a choice of what kind of community I want to belong to.
I wouldn't leave over something as simple as a difference of opinion about the game.
I have heard reference to the new player being run off, somehow it is being twisted. I said it before and I'll say it again, you are making the case for moderation by bringing that up. The moderation had barely begun when this happened, in the future I would like to think that the moderators will catch things like that and deal with them... your platform of no moderation would not have helped the new player, only moderating the thread and having it discussed behind closed doors would have prevented the players departure...
You have no case Hate... You bring nothing to the table. We (those that wished for a more civil environment) have been told for years to just "deal" with it... I would ask that you take some of your own medicine. Just deal with it. There won't be no drama if you don't start no drama.

hind sight being 20/20 I just realized I am just "feeding trolls"...
The hardest thing is to not post, I am obviously not very strong in regards to that. I will be making an effort to just not talk about this anymore, speaking with my vote or my feet whichever if most applicable.
Have fun debating this...by yourselves.

ALFA has many of its oldtime members losing faith. This place always had its faults, but its getting worse. The new 'forum warriors" are destroying whats left of what little hope older players had for ALFA. The moderation rules arent a big issue to me. If I do something wrong I dont have a problem being moderated. Its cause and effect. What is downright silly is the way we have a vocal minority who are coming out against the moderation and their the ones who are needing to be moderated the most. They, with their "kiddie" behavior are upset that they are finally having someone stand up against them. They get so upset they piss and moan about it, make stupid pictures, and in the end they get moderated. All the time their seething because someone finally bitch slapped them down.
All of that is so not what this project should be about. We are wasting so much energy and emotion on things outside the game that ALFA is suffering. Sure, we are seeing a lot of new folks entering ALFA and thats a good sign. I take some pleasure in that seeing as I believe PR and Admissions are playing a huge part into a bit of a spike. I'd personally like to take a poll of new players from the past 2 months and see their thoughts on ALFA and what the like the most and dislike the least. It might be a huge wake up call for many around here.
I honestly feel very sorry when I see the work being done by AL, Morbidkate, Wynna, Zelk, etc. These people are doing a lot of work to make the game enjoyable for those old and new folks. A lot of time has to be spent to make content and these folks are using their spare time to do this for us. I know for a fact that after doing all that work and then they take a break and check out the forums it just emotionally drains them. It makes them reconsider why they are doing what their doing. These folks who are holding up ALFA by their fingernails are gonna someday soon decide to let go. Their going to say enough is enough and let this old girl fall into the Abyss. With hardly any folks stepping up to help out or even trying there wont be anyone left to really save ALFA then.
When that happens I wonder what our famous "forum warriors" will say then. Im sure some will just go onto other games and interact with folks who act just as immature as they do and they wont think another thought about this place, but some might. They might someday realize how their actions not only affect others but have destroyed a lot of peoples enthusiasm to even try to help.
GF has said if he loses hes going to make an off site forum for anyone who wants to hang out there. Well, honestly, that would be the best thing. These forums are the public face of this project and its a cesspool at times. If the problem children want to act like ADD children then at least they will have a place to go. Maybe ALFA will at least look attractive to new players when they get here and those that do stay will treat them with respect and be helpful.
I've talked with a number of ALFans in recent days and a lot of people feel that ALFA is on its last legs. Im just wondering whats going to happen to finally kill it. Im wondering if Ill even be around to see it happen.
I sure hope im wrong and things change around here for the better. Im pretty pessimistic, though.

I'm not trying to present a case. I have my own view which differs slightly from, say Magile, who wants moderation to be more fair I suppose. We are all stuck in the same "anti-moderation" camp, but that doesn't mean we all think the same. I am entitled to vote the way I want to vote. I am entitled to reject the current system through that vote.Nalo Jade wrote:Not leaving to pander a concept mate. I would leave because I have a choice of what kind of community I want to belong to.

Dealing with it doesn't mean I have to like it and I can vote the way I choose to. I've invited you to IRC to talk with other people and enjoy ALFA for what it is, moderated or not. I'm not the one who starts drama but there seems to be an overreaction on behalf of 'some' people. Guess they got the stick too far up there. Might be poking the brain a tad or cutting off the air supply. (This is an antagonistic insult and will get people riled up. Let's watch the reaction. It's philosophical.

Sorry for having fun posting hats and big pictures. Trying to lighten the mood of this super serial gaming community was futile and is unbecoming of an ALFA members. It should be serious topics like all politics, religion, or other debated topics. We should drag real life into this community because why feel miserable in real life when you can also feel miserable online? While my "inappropriate" behavior has been moderated, I didn't know how much hot water posting the most winningest hats in the world would get me into. Yes, it is true my kiddie behavior has often caused me to get upset to the point where I actually urninate myself(sorry mom!!) and moan about it (kidney stone!!) It's not enough for me to accept this moderation because of all the seething I do and crying myself to sleep over being b*tch slapped online.
This is a big picture of a hat. Feel free to be offended.
