Increase density by allowing "dead" servers to be removed from live, and put back to beta at the discretion of admin. Note this could include servers with a few active campaigns, even ones your PC participates in.

Increase density by controlling the number of servers allowed to be live. Once live, servers would not be removed, even if "dead", and their spots could not be taken by other servers while they remained live.

A combination of the first two choices, which allows a maximum number of servers, but servers deemed "dead" by admin can only be removed if they are to be replaced by a server in beta.

Fionn wrote:did you not see the debacle when Duck was bumped? Clearly defined expectations to get *and stay* live are needed. Binding Admin's hands is not, but something more than mere whim (OK, well thought whim, but still whim without defined expectations).

Regular auditing is also needed. I've had PCs point out mistakes in TPI I had no clue about.
There's always going to be a debacle if you bump someone, whether warranted or not. There's no avoiding it.

I just figure our track record for bumping servers hasn't been very good. More often than not we bump the really good ones.

ALFA does not need to be 'saved' the few numbers on right now reflects what many have said, the wind down of nwn1 as people prepare for its replacement. To be honest I just lost a PC I had been playing for some time and I thought about just taking a break until nwn2. What is the sense of creating a character that you may begin to enjoy, only to have it taken from you by ooc circumstances (the switchover to the new game). OOC issues are influencing all of ALFA as it prepares for the shift, and that is something that we all must just accept. The sky is not falling because there are alot of servers with "0" when you open gamespy.

That being said, my opinion on the whole matter:
Density can never take precidence over immersion or player enjoyment. Simply because one player wishes his server was more full does not mean a less active server should be closed to accommodate him, what about the player who enjoys his niche. Players choose where they play, and to me personally, if a players idea of fun is density, then they should create characters that are flexible enough to travel to where the dense server that month is. I find it questionable if a player has a rigid character concept to prevent them from moving servers, and then starts complaining about density because they feel people should come and join them, not take the initiative to mvoe themselves.

For admin to meddle in the live statuses of servers for the cause of density means they would be turning their backs on a large portion of alfa players who do not consider density important. Each player should have equal rights here, and one should not be hindered for the betterment of others when there is an option for freedom for the players to make their own choices.

People who want density CAN move on their own to fix their issue, closing servers means that you remove any choice from the players of that server and require them to move for reasons they may care nothing about.

But yeah... if TLR was to be taken off live, I would lose 2 houses, a shrine a temple and a halfling village that I've built up there as a player. :?

I'd live, but it'd be a real bummer.

Ronan wrote:Do you know of a campaign-oriented NWN world more active than ALFA? In other words, worlds where most player activities are based off of DMs?
I'd need to know the actual numbers for ALFA to answer this question, though I suspect Bloodlines and Realms of Annoklia beats ALFA for activity on a per server basis even for ALFA's most active servers. ALFA gets a bit of a cheat on the total score by having so many servers, even if they are mostly dead.
Ronan wrote:Combine that with difficult travel, and you've got a bunch of players who don't bother to log in much unless there is a DM on on their home server, because there really isn't much else to do.

Other PWs have much more extensive static content. Crafting, spawns, whatever, people have things to do without DMs. If a DM logs on to a server where 10 PCs are hapily crafting/PGing/whatever away, he isn't flooded by requests or party-chat. But if a DM logs in to a server with 10 PCs on it who are just sitting around waiting for something to do, then his job suddenly because a lot tougher. The later is more common in ALFA because ALFA isn't a persistant world at all, its campaign world.
Well, that is an interesting assessment, and I think it's accurate. For all the proclamations of ALFA being a persistent world, campaign world does describe it a lot better.
Ronan wrote:I could always shut down BG, as a test. I need the box for other things anyways. But what would it accomplish? The only DM who would continue DMing elsewhere would probably be HEEGZ. Would that be worth it?
I've come down from the "kill them" position after reading the two threads. I suppose the answer to density is those players who want it should seek out the most active servers, and let ALFA NWN1 continue on its course. Still, I'm on an "active" server, and there's plenty of times I have no game here. I find myself needing a third gaming option for my lazy summer vacation. Or I suppose I could always apply to be a DM....

You mean like my contacts in Scardale... Yartar... VoLV...LW (MK I)... WD (various times it became unplayable)... Shadowdale is looking good again though :)

Honestly, if you think an Admin would ever enforce the scenario in that cartoon you're high. We might see a server closed, but much like the wealth limits, much thought would be put into the PCs affected. Currently, you're out everything you can't carry because nobody's *forcing* you to leave a server with no DMs or PCs. If Admin closed the server, there would be IC and OOC concessions for your transfer unless refused.

While our leadership may not always be heading the direction *each* of us wants, they are here to see that peeps enjoy ALFA as best we can :)

It will be totally impotent, except against people we "don't like".

Hmm, how do they sustain their numbers? Lots of active DMs who don't burn out, or a nice round-robin of them?

Its also a bit unfortunate, IMO. But we've got players who are only interested in playing in a campaign world, and don't care for anything "static". Then we've also got people looking for PW-style entertainment daily. So naturally the guy looking for Wynna's weekly campaign in TSM is perfectly happy logging in there, while the guy who wants daily entertainment sits alone for an entire week and gets pissed as hell. If only I knew of a good way to route players to a server they'd enjoy the most :?

Fewer servers = Less DMs and less players required for a higher per server DM and player activity/density ratio.

Well.. put in the static content. If a player is not interested in it and just want to play DM run events.. he doesn't have to touch it. I guess I am one of those players that likes to play whenever they can. Sometimes I can catch a DM and have a blast with them, but many times I play only with other players and eventually we go out and adventure on our own and that's fine too.
