Player Admin Self Nominations

Post by dob85y »

It is August 1st (in at least one part of the world), so it is time for the election of a new Player Admin. The self-nomination period will last for one week from the time of this post.

All members in good standing are eligible to run.

The successful candidate will serve until Feburary 2010.

Please do not post in this thread unless you are self-nominating.

Bloody hell Dobs, that's efficient. Half past twelve here and it's already up

8 months. 8 entire months. That's 243 days, if you are interested. Two-thirds of a year. Feels like such a long time. Every month for the past four or so, each time we approach the end I find myself running to the Charter to check to see if it's my turn for elections this time round – each time disappointed. In June I even mistakenly sent Dobs a PM : “Hey mate! Just a reminder – PA election this month”. Luckily I worked out that I still had a month more of this slave labour before he saw the PM, and was able to delete it. But since then, I have almost been counting down the days. The days until I have a chance to step down. The days until I have the opportunity to say No More, and go back to playing/DMing. The days I can make a choice whether or not I want to continue doing this job or go back to just enjoying the game.

So yes, I'm stepping forward for another term of this game. Below you'll find a brief platform of a couple of key points. However, before I go onto that platform, I'm going to have a very small little rant about two subjects.

Thank You
Remember to say thanks. And I'm not talking about saying thanks to me. Make sure you say thanks to all those who help out or do you a favour. Whether it be to your DM for that last session he DMed; to your fellow RPers, for the fun interactions; to that tech genius who managed to add something to the game you're likely to use; or even just to that person in chat who answered a question you had. It doesn't take long to say, but if it is truly meant and expressed, it can make a world of difference.

Lend a Hand
New blood is vital to ALFA. We cannot continue relying on the same people to keep things running. If you have a bit of time on your hands, please, please, please, PLEASE step up and give a hand. Somewhere. Anywhere. It doesn't matter if you don't have technical skills – I certainly don't – there is still somewhere YOU can help!

Hell, even throw your name into this election! If you think there's something you'd like to see changed or done differently, this is a good way to get the idea on the table.

Part One : Admissions

All in all, I am happy with the state of Admissions.

No, I didn't create a whole entire subheading just to say that. Here I am going to discuss some plans for upcoming events that seem to fit here nicely. In the next half a year we have two great opportunities before us. First, within two months, we have a Persistent World Con, organised by Grinning_Fool. Second, a couple of months after that, we have the NWCon5 coming up. Both of these I want ALFA to make a strong showing in, and will be doing what I can to make that happen.

I know we have participated in the NWCon4 last year – although I was away at the time. I hear it was a failure. In order to prevent making the same mistakes this year, I have gone and spoken to a big bunch of people about what we could improve on, for both of these events. We are planning on bringing the OAS back up to date, adding a bit more content to it, and for both of these events, it will be online and fully staffed. I will be taking off the entire weekends to make sure there is at least one DM around, and will shortly be calling out for more people to step forward and help. I am hoping that both of these events will help to get our name out there. Even if they do not bring in a huge amount of new players, at least it will let the community know that we are here and that we are open to new members and ideas.

These two events are going to be my major focus over the next four or so months. I want this to work.

Part Two : Discipline

Although I hate using the term, I am sure you all know what I mean. That nasty part of the PA job where it comes to investigating problems and dealing out Strikes and all that. Although, once again, I do not think there are any changes needed in this area, I am adding this very brief section to sum up my philosophy in this area. Are you ready? Make sure you don't blink!

Minimum punishment for the maximum gain. Maximising utility, if you will.

Part Three : Retention

About a month ago now, I spoke with danielmn about the subject of Retention. One of the suggestions he made, a method he used when he was Retention Head, was to individually PM everyone a basic Welcome to ALFA PM – offering to help them find their feet and making sure they know that if they have any questions, they can come speak to me. I have been trying this out the past couple of weeks to some interesting results. Over the next couple of months, I want to further develop this system and try and really improve the resources around for new players.

Part Four : That's it?

I'm going to finish off saying that I am not promising to serve the entire term (6 months). I am going to commit myself to seeing through the PWCon and the NWCon5. After those events have come and gone, I will step back and take a look to see if I wish to continue serving the rest of the term. A small point, but I only feel that it's fair that people know it when they cast their votes.

And also, a big thanks to a handful of people who, in this last week when I was seriously debating running, really did send some positive will my way. Appreciated :)

So is that it? Yes. That is all. No big sweeping plans of change, no great new endeavours to embark on. It's time for me to settle down and start fine tuning those dials until we have things running as smoothly as possible. Of course, I always will be keeping my ears and eyes open to any new suggestions of how we can make ALFA a more enjoyable place – but for now, I am viewing the next term as a one of improving the status quo, not redefining it.

And with that, I sign off and leave you with a quote (as it wouldn't be a proper Rotku platform without a corny quote of some sort). So today, I give you Robert A. Heinlein:

“Don't ever become a pessimist ... a pessimist is correct oftener than an optimist, but an optimist has more fun, and neither can stop the march of events.”
