Favourite ALFA/Other moments?

Post by Rumple C »

Dredge up some old memories.

Inspired by another current topic involving RPXP rewards vs statics.

RP is its own reward methinks.

I have a tonne of memorable moments from playing in ALFA, and would be fascinated to read about other folks toons moments as well.

I sure don't remember the first static I did, or the first goblin I whomped, but I do remember the first few pcs I ran into way back in early...2002, 2003? (yikes! that long?)

So to kick things off...

My first memorable PC was a shit-stirring hin named Pokk, who was absolutely two faced. I remember going back and forth between two (lowish level) pcs who were facing off, telling each they could beat the other. Everyone knew what I was up to ooc, and was rofl. They didn't end up fighting, when a DM came in a ic broke up the action with a guard, but it really helped set the tone of the PC for me.

Another memorable moment was the culmination of a story arc on TLR (The Long Road server in ALFA 1). Our group (the Wayfarers + 1 other, we were all in the 6-7 level range I think? 1 ranger, 1 barbarian, 1 fighter, 1 rogue/ranger, 1 druid), had trekked way up into the mountains to retreive an artifact/item that was under the care of a dragon cult. There were 5? pcs I think, and we ended up facing off against a white dragon + priest on the old rock span bridge (for those that remember it from the NWN Toolset). Epic battle at the end of an long story arc. 2 pcs ended up dead. 1 chose not to be raised. It also led to my PC blaming another (ic - unfairly) for the others death, which spiralled into the PC's eventual lonely death.

Hmm, what else... Played a political PC for a while on WD, who convincingly brown nosed and curried favour with Ayergos PC, and rode his coat tails as he advanced up the ladder... the PC sucked in combat, but was built with the idea that if he was in combat alone, he had failed to use his brain, and deserved to die. Had some epic sessions with ThrasyMachus before he left.

Ok, someone elses turn. Lets hear some memorable (in game) moments.

Four separate CvC encounters, all Warlocks. They were fab. :|

Nah, it's all grand really. :) ALFA has been pretty good to me over the last two years and my IC picture journal (see sig. link) says everything that needs saying.

Nwn1- Northern cormyr

We had a specialty enchanter in our group who was pretty new to alfa. We also had two dwarven tanks.

When our enemy showed up, an elf, the dwarven tanks charged, and the caster cast sleep at the elf.

The spell arrived just as the dwarves did, and they both skidded to a halt, asleep, and the elf's feet.

I lol'ed, and my caster friend died of embarrassment. The DM was kind, and did not coup de grace the dwarves.

That is hilarious.

Favorite memory... probably the Ducklings World Tour or one of the many memorable sessions involving Misty's Lakshmi.

World Tour is the 'fun' memory. My PC, Gilim (Maxcell), Jen Wa (Valn99), Aelaelsar (Legio), one other guy whose name I don't remember. Shadowdale Ducklings was the nickname given to a fairly sizable group of njubs to ALFA who started on SD around the same time (autumn 2004). My pc was lvl 4 or 5, the rest were around 3, the unknown guy lvl 2. We got an IC invite from Regor (laddy's androgynous HO bard) to come see him in Waterdeep so someone decided, 'why not?'. We'd done a bit of traveling over to DD so we figured it was time to see other parts of the world, and set out on a grand adventure through NC, checking out Arabel en route briefly I think.

Then we got to BG. ALFA1 BG, with the hex maps and dangerous random encounters everywhere outside of towns. We were scared. None of us were particularly well outfitted or strong combat builds (I think Corwyn wore mundane chainmail and had a regular longsword, though he did have a nwn1 tower shield), dodged a few minor dangers I think, then we ran into a BG hobgoblin warlord north of Nashkel. It was the longest fight I'd been in, Gilim and the unknown PC nearly died, jen wa and Ael ran out of spells, and the thing kept drinking CMW or CSW pots every time we got it to nearly dead, which was not easy because it was so hard to hit. Spider Jones I think was there watching and I thought he was trying to kill us. Eventually it ran out of cure pots and decided it wasn't worth it, and ran off. We were totally out of pots and badly hurting, ran to Nashkel to try and recover. Everyone for some reason seemed to be mad at ME because I was sort of the leader (due to being slightly higher level and being a bit more bold or stupid with my PC) and we weren't in good shape and some were convinced we were going to die traveling through BG. :)

Thankfully, things worked out; we got to Beregost, met some PC's like Daramir (who did NOT make us feel more relaxed with that weird cursed armor or whatever), then eventually ran into Ayergo's Paladin and Marianna's druidess; both were uber high lvl from our perspective (probably lvl 7, 8ish) and good guy friends from back in SD, hooray! They healed us and escorted us to the docks of Baldur's Gate, where we caught the ship to WD uneventfully.

WD was a lot of fun; we got there and realized they had some kind of festival going on and folks got to participate in events like MS recently. All the woes and pains were forgotten and everyone was having a blast exploring the huge city and meeting up with Regor (although I vaguely remember Gilim's low CHA nearly getting us in trouble), etc. Our return trip through BG for some reason was uneventful (although we /might/ have avoided a grey render somehow?), we got to NC, then hit Arabel...

... where Twisted was about to start a session in the sewers of Arabel with the HO bandits or whatever they were. Somehow we let ourselves get recruited by Amy Woodwalker to go down there with her to do... something or other. It turned out to be a thrilling, deadly and long sewer crawl fighting those HOs (later I learned how deadly they were) which I'm still amazed we lowbie Ducklings all managed to survive - I was NOT using ranged but melee. At the end of it I got my first +1 sword which made me ecstatic; we crawled out of the sewers bloodied and dirty, exhausted but proud, to be met by a group of Arabel PCs in their finery who attended to us. The next session we went home to SD, and to this day we look back and laugh about that trip, how scared we were, how we seemed to attract DMs every server we hit (it was uncanny), and how much fun it was.

The sessions with Misty, especially with Inaubryn DMing on Westgate, were epically intense, my stomach in knots for hours. It was so intense I considered bailing or regretted having signed up more than once, thinking 'This is too much' but I'm so glad I didn't, even when Corwyn got all his gear taken (by then he'd finally managed a suit of full plate!) and nearly became a slave gladiator. I kept thinking I was stupid stupid for sticking around scummy Westgate and getting in trouble hanging around an evil skanky half drow, but it led to so much fun (having said that I do not recommend hanging around skanky half drow). Some of the dialog between Lakshmi and Corwyn was priceless... starting with insults and over many weeks turning into a strange alliance then friendship and ... beyond. I was glad I got some of the Ducklings involved down in Westgate with me and Misty with Inaub DMing; though I think at one point they were starting to hate me again when things were looking really bleak! :) In the end Lakshmi saved the day calling in a favor/timely connection just as we were getting ready to start a lethal arena fight against a nasty group of Westgate gladiators. I'll never forget Inaub's NPC running into the arena screaming "STOP! HOLD EVERYTHING!" and then arresting the bad guys!

Funnest plot - The death rattles of the Sharran faction. There were 12 members when I joined................but that didn't last long as it all fell aprat. The fun included the hunt for Misty's traitorous drow ( not-so-fun the more than suspect .bic remake and name change), the attempted CVC of Malcer on Daggerford by some of the Maskite folks when he got outed (and successfully ran at a full sprint through 5 strong fire traps placed to block his exit and made every single reflex save), Vanrack Moonstar (DMd by burt I think) bitchslapping Witch's PC Esschen to near death for insubordination, and hours on hours of hours of listening to Cynon try to find a way to weasle out of conflict with the goody goods while still maintaining he was a "good Sharran". Chaos reigned and nearly every PC got CvCd by the time it was all over!

Funnest static content: A tie for robbing noble houses in WD never knowing when a badass wizard would spawn to catch you in the act and shanghai-ing WD criminals to take cross-server to Skullport to sell into slavery!

Funnest single event- The seige by undead of Westbridge, a little town on TLR, that put Malcer, rusty's bitch drow, NickD's hin, and an ex-sharran selunite in a party.........then went on for 15 hours with interchange of 5 DMs. Awesome!

There were so many other fun times on TLR and WD but it was dangerous out there (4 PCs dead from Earth Elementals in a one-off DM game, goblins with Spot +30, epic fire traps randomly placed on armoires in country farmhouses).

(( I also got to to meet Rumple's Pokk as an NPC on TLR. He helped Malcer get some magic gear to help him "go underground" when he found he was the last Sharran standing))

Pokk tried to cast a charm spell on "Soppi", another hin (Cleric of Yondalla). She passed the will save, and promptly called "Mind Rape!". The guards caught up with Pokk, and made him pay 100 gold fine.

He was living in ?Red Larch? worming his way into a position of influence. He popped out of a barrel the first time I saw him.

Good old days on TLR.

OH -- and best single area (though not exactly "Standards Compliant")----- WD had this crazy extra-planar traveller who would randomly appear with something like a .001% chance when you ATd through certain doorways in the City. This traveller had a magic shoppe that sold EVERY item in the creator. :)

Between this thread and the turn the "advancement moderation" thread took, we sure do look like a grey-haired group of grumpies living on past glories, pining for the golden past and telling the whippersnappers to zip it, don't we.

First NWN1 ALFA PC CvCd within 10 minutes after following a thief into an alley behind the Dripping Dagger in Waterdeep.

Botched CvC attempt by a creepy monk in the waterdeep sewers "And now... I'm afraid I must kill you", subsequent fleeing to the eastern servers, later rise to spymaster of most powerful thieves guild in ALFA history.

Pirate adventures in The Pirate Isles with Rotku, Lafter, Evro, Witch

Thiefly intrigue in thieves guild of Selgaunt.

CvC buildup (but never consummated), months of following around and creeping out a dwarf PC from the Iron Throne.

Anything in the Anauroch... Ayergo's killing of my friend and almost killing my PC for NPC murder, then feeding the corpse to the ravens and dogs. Making friends with Bedine tribesmen. Lizardmen fortresses and giant castles in the great desert. Topped off by a trip to Carceri.

Loudwater... all of it. Thanks Mick and Arana!

Daggerford... most action packed, dangerous server. Got to feel like a hero, repeatedly.

+10000000 All the mess 'tween Dorn and Greoa be great and sad at the same time if you know what i mean.

2
The (previous/subsequent?) story arc. Dorn and the other Wayfarers saving the great gold dragon, all fleeing the final pit fiend/dragon battle, and having her pay for the Wayfarers fort on the TRL crossroads (built by us) that became a hub for many from then on. May fav group of alfans some of which i'm playing with again now!

3
Dorns death. In Daggerford, with a party he knew only a few from holding a bridge against scores of orcs as others fled, eventually gong down to poison. Total heroic death moment for me after years of the char, even though it wasa pickup game rather than major story (cant reemer the DM but he was like "....ohhhh shit that wasn't supposed to happen" lol). Refusing the rez seemed fitting.

4
Sir Kit Gyrfalcon. Two bits, pride when i came to the relaisation he was basically commanding/quartermastering the western front of the loudwater shade war against the cyricists (great interaction with Evro for countless hours every week..outside of sessions with others...great PCs in that whole arc) and the special batton that let my PC control 20-30 NPC soldiers:)

Secondly his negotiation with the Beastlord and agreeing to willingly sacrifice himself (his body) for the immortal to inhabit in exchange for the Beastlord destroying the humanoid armies threatening Loudwatrer and drive of the Shade. It was a fantastic end (again after years) to have the Red Knight stepping into the mortal plane to gather her commander as his soul was driven from his body and riding to Warriors rest tobecome a commander of one of her armies in the ongoing celestial wars.

Arriving on Northern Corymr and finding the server in the midst of 'tying up' a plot involving Moyen(?) the Black Dragon.

Watching NC Half-Orcs split Twisted_Ascencions ranger in two (83 damage after stoneskin).

Every minute of my PrC quest (even if it took 18 months for Thangs/Drankathar to complete).

Simply exploring NC when it was completely rebuilt from scratch.
