Install latest CE to bring back the in-game server browser
As a public service announcement:
The latest 1.0.0.22 CE version, which was recently released, adds back the in-game server browser that went offline when GameSpy went down. ALFA and a large number of other PWs are listed in the new server browser. We are listed under the Role Play section.
You can download it here. Recommended for DMs, too, since it has a DM client crash bug fix in the change log.
To use, extract the zip contents to a folder of your choice, and then run the included NWLauncher.exe to start the game. (I recommend making a shortcut on your desktop to NWLauncher to do that.) Remember to use NWLauncher.exe each time to continue using the CE.
You can also use Zelknolf's server monitor to view the same server list used by the CE from your desktop.
For ALFA servers, as an additional reminder, you can connect to any online server and you will be automatically moved to your "home" server by seamless portal (provided you do not cancel out of the portal message in quarantine). This will also update the most recent direct connect IP to point to your home server as an added bonus.
// Edit: Zelknolf destickying this one, as its links point to the (currently-down) nwvault, and the CE version is wrong.

Thanks for the heads up. And kudos to Skywing (and Foam!) for this.

Would contact the cNet team about it, it's far more likely you are getting a false positive than that something slipped by their searches. Unless you mean advertisementware... in which case, yeah, yuck.dergon darkhelm wrote:does anyone have a link to a .zip opener? I tried CNET and it put malware on my laptop
Anyway, I use 7-zip. http://www.7-zip.org/
If you're running Microsoft Windows you should be able to auto-open it though.

To run the DM client from the Client Extension, you need to create a shortcut to NWLauncher.exe and add a space and -dmc to the box in the shortcut properties showing the pathname.

Re: Install latest CE to bring back the in-game server brows
Following an idea from Adanu, I have created a page on the website that explains the best way to connect to our servers.
For starting, I have copied the message Rumple put a bout the CE:
http://www.alandfaraway.org/node/2487
Could you please post any modifications you see would help new players ?
Edit: this is linked to the menu on the left of the forum (How to connect to our servers) both in the New Players and the normal menu.
Edit 2: I have also added the name to type in to direct connect to the server in the popup you see when hovering on the server populations at the top of the website.

Re: Install latest CE to bring back the in-game server brows
Minor correction to the text there (which I cannot alter, for it is penned by admin):
"Second, download and follow the instructions to use Skywings Client Extension, alongside Zelknolf's server monitor. Use the monitor to find an ALFA server of your choice, and hit connect. All files should download to your computer seamlessly from there."
The latter part should be:
"Use the monitor to find an ALFA server of your choice, double click that server and hit connect, providing a password if necessary. All files should download to your computer seamlessly from there."
I know I should also have a connect button on the list, and probably a context menu on the individual items (I should also check if the list is visible before calling ShowDialog on it! But yeah, finite hours in the day). I'll get to it all! But until then, server connections are double clicks.

I just updated it.

Re: Install latest CE to bring back the in-game server brows
I can't get the client to work with my freshly installed GOG game. When I click the launcher I get the message "Failed to launch Neverwinter Nights 2 (error 2)". Has anyone with a GOG game been able to make it work?

Re: Install latest CE to bring back the in-game server brows
There is a manual way to get it to hook into the nwn2 program (From the readme file)
(b) Apply the client extension after starting the game.
1) (First time only.) Double-click hdlinstall.reg to install support for .hdl
files. You only need to perform this step once per computer.
2) Start Neverwinter Nights 2 in normal or DM client mode, and go to the main
menu. It is recommended that you use Neverwinter Nights 2 in windowed mode
but this is not strictly required.
3) Navigate to where you have placed ClientExtension.hdl in Explorer,
right-click the ClientExtension.hdl file, and choose the 'Apply' option
from the menu that appears.
4) Log on to your server as normal. You must follow steps 3-5 again each time
you exit Neverwinter Nights 2. Be sure to apply the extension -before- you
log on to your server.

Re: Install latest CE to bring back the in-game server brows
1) Extract CE to a nice location.
For example: C:\NWN\ClientExtension_Latest
2) Right-click on NWLauncher.exe and drag it to your desktop (to create a short-cut).
3) Re-name that short-cut to the name of the ALFA server you want to connect to.
For example: ALFA MS
4) Right-click on said short-cut then choose properties.
Change the target to look like this:
C:\NWN\ClientExtension_Latest\NWLauncher.exe +connect ms.alandfaraway.org +password ***
(*** is the be replaces with whatever the current password is)
Repeat for all ALFA servers you want to connect to.
Password and server connect info can be found here:
