Those are losses in market value due to stock price decline though, right? A lot different than an operating loss.

Well, it may not be that easy, because the gaming market is very complex compared to Hollywood in the 30's, as far as products go. I suspect MMO's and new releases will take a hit, as people bargain shop for their interactive entertainment. Well, we'll see.

Actually, gaming tends to be relatively acyclical, which means it doesn't track well with ups and downs in the economy. The coming/present recession will be a bad one though so the recent past may not be much of an indicator. Regardless, if the stock is underpriced then its a good buy opportunity and good buys are getting scarce in today's markets.

Chances are good that MMOs will take a hit should a large section of the player base need to tighten their belts, especially for all kids whose parents pay for their accounts. To mom and dad, billys 15 dollar a month game is an easy cut to make.

That doesn't seem to be the general pattern though. The escapism inherent in games appears to be more attractive in times of economic stress. Little Billy may be screwed, but he's not the bread and butter of the industry.

Wait, wut? Gaming targets people with disposable income? People find escape soothing when times are troubled? You sir, are a loony. You'd best take your medicine before we lock you up again.

Yeah, next he'll say we can expect SFF novels to do well, relatively speaking, the coming years.

Or maybe he'll even suggest that paranormal romance and/or urban fantasy will become even larger juggernauts. What a tool. He's probably, like, a professor or something.

Quiet, knaves. Respect the solemn uberliness of my polemics. Your mockery only serves to further illustrate that Swift has no future in business.

you're kidding, right? 15 dollars a month is the cheapest babysitting rates going! Whack the kid in front of an MMO and he's out of your hair for hours.

When alot of families have to rule out going to the movies because of financial stress (entertainment is one of the first cuts alot of people make) 15 bucks a month for a video game is very hard to justify.

Guild Wars will sell a lot...

And yes I know it's probably the worst MMO around there (they don't sell themselves as MMOs though).

Who derailed all the political bickering with this analysis of MMOs?
