There we go... little disappointed by the aussie's tendency to use brute force, but I had a good time, obviously 8).

Cheers,

Checked the score when I got up. Very bad loss.

You would not be the only one. Alot of the australians got into yellow card trouble during the qualifiers for playing a higher impact brand of soccer (yes, soccer, sue me). Same for the club teams that have made it into the Asians Cup.

The ref was spot-on though. The two yellows for faked fouling were perfectly done, and while the red against the aussie seemed a little harsh, it was defendable, and I believe he did it to try to calm the whole team down a little, since they were rather rough almost all around.

Har! Loved the NZ equaliser. Go sheepsy-boys! Profoundly deserved imho, considering the Slovak's goal was blatantly offside.

I thought we made a pretty good showing of ourselves at the start but started unravelling towards the end of the first half and never really improved until the last couple of minutes of overtime. Got a lot of ball time, but never really did much with it...

Anyway, just getting into the World Cup has been a great victory for us. We'd always hope to win a game, but considering we're ranked around the bottom couple teams in the Cup, a draw is an excellent result as well. I suspect it'll be considered NZ's best football result ever and the way people are celebrating here you'd think we just won the tournament.

That English commentator was too smarmy by half on our chances though. Wanted to bop him on the nose.

Well, it's your first point gain (1 for a draw, 3 for a win) at a worldcup, so I guess it is.

Tell me about it, same with the win over AUS here. I hate then premature jubilation.

From an Australian paper:

Australasia 1 - Slovakia 1
Australasia? Jeez Aussies, way to stake a claim on our result!

*cough* The only reason you made it to the world cup is because Australia successfully lobbied to become part of the Asian Confederation and therefore never had the chance to knock New Zealand out of the qualifying rounds :P

What's it with Ghana and lucky penalty shots? Still, the draw was kinda deserved, especially in the second half all I saw from the aussies was long shots into the enemy half... not exactly build-up-soccer.

Oh, btw:
