have been following this since mid february heh, the random messages have been rather interesting.
things we know:
it's not by bioware, but instead by a guy that worked for Bioware and his new team (check domain listings to see whom it is registered to). He was a major person in the making of the originals though
the team got a new copy of the latest 3dsmax
they've been looking for 2d sprite artists and animators
they got a brand new apple mac
they're the team behind the mdk2 hd remake
they dont have the rights to make a sequel (in theory)

Certainly not a sequel. Every asset on the teaser page is directly from the original Baldurs Gate.

yup... judging from the other facts, My suspicion is a remake designed for ipads... less exciting in a way, though it might actually cause me to purchase an ipad

Thank goodness it is not an ipad port!! Beamdog created a new division named Overhaul Games, who will be using and improving the Infinity Engine as a base to update both Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II likely to today's gaming standards. On the Overhaul team are several of the original developers to keep the project on target.
The site now is up though heavily overloaded with traffic(they should have anticipated this) and not much more news than what I stated above. Disappointing item to me personally is that it is only the announcement that development has begun, not that it is complete.

Im surprised there wasn't at least 1 screenshot of what fans should expect from the overhaul.
