Faedra sits out among the ruins outside of Gullykin with her book in her lap. The moonlight casts shadows across the ground and the wind sighs along the canyon where a river once flowed. The softer scratching sound of her quill stops and she looks down, reading what she had written.

Moonlight on crumbling stone,
past beauty revealed now covered in moss.
The wind sighs through barren trees
singing a mournful tune of woe and loss.
The ruins lie undisturbed but for nature's hand
reclaiming what was taken.
Lonely vista of broken stone,
so soon forgotten, so soon forsaken.

She brushes her fingers against the words and then closes the book, looking out again into the ruins.

Faedra looked at the hin in the shadowy light of the tent. Essmi was curled in Xujja's lap and she smiled at the tenderness between the two. Dark and light together they looked ethreal, like spirits given physical form. Quietly she began a song.

My snowflake is lovely, perfection unique.
Her beauty glistens like diamonds atop a tall mountain peak.

Her eyes sparkle like the waters of a crystaline pool.
My snowflake, my beauty, my love, I'm forever with you.

Her voice ached with yearning on the word forever. Oh, how she longed for that.

Her anger is terrible and cruel like a cold winter gale.
No escaping her fearsome smile, or the axe as it fell.

Essmi's smile shone in the faint light of the tent.

She is dangerous like the ice covered land of my home.
My beauty, my snowflake, my love, I call her my own.

Faedra looked to Xujja but his eyes were on Essmi, smiling at her enjoyment of the song. She had written it for him, from his eyes. From his expression she had gotten everything right.

"Some day I hope you will say our own Faedra." Essmi's words settled over her like a balm easing the ache in her heart.

Forever is worth any cost she silently vowed, any cost at all.

Night falls over the city's walls
The breeze sighs through the trees
As it dies the silence falls
Still I wait for thee

Candlemarks creep slowly by
Like the river to the sea
My breath escapes, a gentle sigh
Still I wait for thee

So many years ago this day
I settled beneath this tree
And though my life has flown away
Still I wait for thee

Forever I wait for thee

Just discovered these gems! Really nice work, offers a lot of perspective on Faedra. Looking forward to keeping up with this.

From My Tower

Post by Melody »

From my tower window I could see for miles
the merchants, their markets, an ocean of people
The city before me, every street every steeple

I could listen to their laughter, I could look down at their smiles
Veiled from their gazes my face was never seen
Not yet woman, not a girl, somehow stuck there in-between

That's why sometimes you'll find I hide behind
You, my lute, a corner, or perhaps a convenient chair
Sometimes it's still uncomfortable to see them stare

From my window I could see the sailors sailing out to sea
But though they might have seen my window
No one ever looked at me.

Faedra sucked on her swollen lower lip as her quill scratched against the paper of her songbook. She wrote without thinking, the steady scratching the only sound since everyone had left to check on the safety of the shrine. Reading over what she had written she pauses for a long moment.

Have you been walking in a dream, then over the chasm you are leaning?
Have you ever walked along a road and gotten that sinking, I'm lost feeling?
Have you ever looked into a mirror and didn't know who you were seeing?
Or is it only me?

Have you dreamed a lovely dream and then it turned into a nightmare?
Did you look around for friends and realized that there's no one there?
Did you ask your love for sympathy and realize that they don't care?
Or is it only me?

Faedra looked around the empty cave and then tore the page slowly from the book. Tearing the poem into strips, she got rid of it the only way she was able. Chewing, she swallowed the words before anyone else could read them.

My Friend

Post by Melody »

Remember that darkened road,
Your eyes were burning red.
With your smile, you threatened me,
You said you wished me dead.
But I never shunned you dear.
I never wished you harm.
I said it didn't bother me,
I hid my deep alarm.
And when my heart was broken,
And you were so in love.
I tried to hide the pain it caused,
When you two cooed like doves.
Instead I left and ran away,
To keep you from my pain.
I stood alone outside the Gate,
In the cold and pouring rain.
Why have you forsaken me?
Did I ever treat you wrong?
Did I never say I cared for you?
Did you not like my songs?
Every day I wait to hear from you,
But the letters never come.
Why have you forsaken me?
What could I have done?
