Oh NO! They are saying mean things about me! If it gets to a point to where someone is saying really nasty things, chat is usually self moderated with everyone else telling the one person to stfu.
exactly what with this "do anything about it" -- tell em they are idiots and ignore them - i assume chat has an ignore feature to shut out messages from jackasses
/ignore insertnicknamehere

That does the trick

I chose #4. If I need something done, I'll plan it out in advance with PMs. Besides, I didn't RP my butt off in the OAS to sit around in a chatroom. I did it so I could RP my butt off in the Live servers.

And lurk about the forums.

Hyperbolic wrote:The hard and fast rules would be- 1.) No sexual talk. No words like c*nt, tw*t, etc. 2.) No swearing just to swear, sentences like "MFing son of a MFing b*tch" (just explicitly spelled out) is too much. 3.) No swearing aimed at people in the community, whatsoever. 4.) No racist/sexist/etc. statements/jokes of any kind.
As a member of the community who IS under 18 (yes! We do exist), I personally have no real desire to go into the chat room if it is unmoderated. I think the rules that Hyper outlined would do well. Swearing, IMO, is a pathetic way of expressing oneself. There are much much better ways to put a point across. Swearing is something you hear little kids doing in the playground, thinking it's really cool. Or those stupid, druggies who are too thick to think of any other words to use.

Not only that, but the Chatroom is a great place for visitors to come and ask questions, or even new members to get advise. Do we really want to put them off any more than we already do?

If you want to use offensive language, cyber, and have discrimatry convosations there's nothing stopping you from creating another channal to do it in, or using Query!

[Edit]The first chatrooms I ever really went to on the internet was Sorcerer's Place - a highly moderated place. That has set the standard's for me. If I had my way, our chatroom would be nearly as strickly moderated as that. I'll give you some examples of the rules
No personal attacks, insults, sexual harassment or flames.

[Other usual stuff that you'd expect in any place]

No lame "l33t" spelling, not even partial like: "I'm about 2 run off 2 get u sumthin." or "Any1 know y I'm so stupid?" Everyone trying to make sense out of such stupid sentences will need twice as long as if you had written "2" as to and "u" as you; the spelling normal people use. Although common abbreviations like lol, cya, rotfl, lmao, wb and so on are fine (because they are used sporadically), the above 2 and u and y for instance are not, since people can use them repeatedly in practically every sentence.

No obscene nicknames. Try to keep your nickname civil and short. (15 characters maximum length.) We reserve the right to kick/ban you if your nickname is not acceptable, but we will attempt to warn you first.

Do not type in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. This is seen as yelling and when done repeatedly is very annoying and very rude. Excessive use of punctuation marks like ! and ? (more than 3) also falls under this rule.

No colours. As with above, colours get very annoying, very quickly; especially some of the brighter hues. Don't use them.

[etc etc]
To me, that is how the rules should be. But as I know ALFA will never rise itself to that level, in terms of chat, I'm happy for Hyper's type of rules above to be used.

bah just make two chatrooms (one moderated to death and the other one totally free) and see which one is used.

Come on Rotku -- you've cussed a bit no? If you haven't you should try it. say it with me "I've F'ing had it with all the MF'ing language around here". there didn't that make you feel better? :P

are we gonna ban the use of OMFG? we really should it is religiously offensive and has a swear word in the acronym.

If we do go the moderator route i'm gonna file complaints against as many peeps as possible til there's only the moderator and me left with chat access.

well, unless they're like pulp fiction or big lebowski quotes.

then it's like every other word :|
People talk of bestial cruelty, but that's a great injustice and insult to the beasts; a beast can never be so cruel as man, so artistically cruel.

When GF becomes the sane one, I get worried. If these are our options, then I'll vote 1 until the censors get some perspective.

I really would like to see racial, religious and sexual preference slurs be banned from chat. It's negative, and I do find it rather offensive at times. And I really don't like hearing deragatory sexual remarks about women either. That, is what you should be banning peeps for. Yeah, I can hit ignore I guess...

Now swearing.... swearing, I can handle.

I agree with GF. This is actually the first online gaming community that I've seen, kick someone for saying swear words not even directed at anyone in particular. And silly ones at that like those mentioned above. As long as it's not a continuous flow of fscks coming from someone's mouth, I have no problem with it.

Honestly though, people should moderate themselves as best as they can, seeing as some people really do get offended by foul language. I'd rather not lose a good player over something trivial as a cuss word... ( And yeah, to me, it's rather silly to quit over someone's "dirty" mouth.)

I picked #1, but that presumes it's not already in violation of the griefing and harrasment rules we've in place.
