The interesting thing about this, Reports Without Borders gives Venezuela a score of 29.00 and the US only slightly behind at 13.00, when it comes to freedom of press - on a scale ranging from 109.00 in North Korea to 0.5 in some contries like Finland and Ireland. So really, the US isn't a huge amount better when it comes to freedom of press. AND this is an organisation which is often criticied for favouring Western countries, such as the US.

Not sure if you are aware but the reason this thread started is that Chavez just shut down the largest Television network in the country the other day because it was critical of him and then there were some clashes between police and protestors following this.

Oh, I know. It certainly isn't a good thing. My point was merely that freedom of press isn't that brillaint in this country who is thinking of removing Hugo from his stand either.

No one is thinking about removing Hugo. What we're watching is a train wreck as a man who idolizes Castro and has supreme executive authority gears up to take down his opponents and consolidate power. Castro executed and exiled thousands as he consolidated power and all evidence suggests that Chavez will more than likely follow that model. This has nothing to do with the US, its gonna be tragic and bloody but at least this one aint our fault.
