linksolar variations over the past 20 years should have had a cooling effect
Solar variation ruled out in global warming
Solar variation ruled out in global warming
Not that I had any doubts, given that such an explanation should have caused global warming on every planet in our system.

but pluto is warmer than predicted omgMulu wrote:Not that I had any doubts, given that such an explanation should have caused global warming on every planet in our system.
(please ignore that we don't have complete data on Pluto's climate since we've only known it existed for 40% of its orbital period, and that if the sun were putting out enough energy to warm up Pluto Earth would literally be on fire)

They've only been observing it for 20 years. Concidering that the Sun is what makes the Earth habitable, it should not be discounted. We do not know everything about how it works or affects the planets.Mulu wrote:Not that I had any doubts, given that such an explanation should have caused global warming on every planet in our system.linksolar variations over the past 20 years should have had a cooling effect

Re: Solar variation ruled out in global warming
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh they've been observing solar activity fairly accurately since at least 1890, which is longer than 20 years. I know math can be tough, but trust me on that one.Zakharra wrote:They've only been observing it for 20 years. Concidering that the Sun is what makes the Earth habitable, it should not be discounted. Edit: And lulz, I just noticed the funniest part. Even if you were correct and we'd only been doing solar observations for 20 years, we've been watching solar output decrease for 20 years while global temperature increased. So even with your argument, you're still wrong. The Sun varies on an 11-year cycle between periods of high and low activity. But above this, there's a longer term trend. For most of the 20th century, output from the Sun was slowly and steadily rising. But in 1985, that trend reversed, with solar output slowly declining. Global temperatures here on Earth continued climbing, unaffected.
Also, the sun is not even entirely what makes the Earth habitable. Without the natural, baseline greenhouse effect, Earth would be frozen like Mars is. It's too far away.
Yes, in fact it's been frozen like Mars at least twice in its history, causing life to almost snuff out completely. It's also been 60% hotter, at which time most life perished as well.
Life on Earth exists on a razor thin edge of habitability. The sooner policymakers realize that, the higher our chances of long term survivability.

Huh. *looks at other topic and sees some contradiction* I don't see any reason in us, as a race, surviving anyways. I mean, what's the point? To see our grandchildren well off with families of their own, the satisfaction of our DNA still floating around the world, and the prospects of a "good life" for our descendants? That's as shallow as anyone else's thinking, much less an ape's.Life on Earth exists on a razor thin edge of habitability. The sooner policymakers realize that, the higher our chances of long term survivability.
" Keep our race going!"
" Why?"
" Oh, because we're intelligent lifeforms that ummm, should be living here."
" Oh? Why?"
" Because we need to survive!"
" Again, why?"
" Because! The world can't get along with out us!"
" How's that? Looks like most of what we do is oppress and divide ourselves, destroy one another, steal, cheat and lie... not to mention pollute the Earth up real good and cause extinction upon other species.. "
" That's just how the world becomes a better place! Gotta take what you can before you go!"
Sounds like someone hasn't faced that fear of death yet.

Reduce carbon output to reestablish carbon equilibrium. Though it doesn't require being liberal or a humanist to come to that conclusion.
