NWN Revival

Post by Spider Jones »

Edit: The poll is NOT Waterdeep server specific.

Sooo, after a brief chat discussion Sandermann has offered to host/HDM a revived NWN WD server. The server will have to be combed through and fixed up a bit, and we'll need able DMs (maybe SD/NC players wanna give their NWN DMs a chance to play/get DMed by them?).

Anyone interested in playing/DMing on a revived NWN WD server please speak up, let me know if there is a real interest in seeing this done. If there is there's possibility of a second revived server as well.

I love Waterdeep, but I'm voting no. I'm working on Skullport atm though, and I've got a couple of WD areas fleshed out to tie in also, hence my vote. Not trying to be a downer of course, or be offensive. It was a great server for lots of years, but it also requires a very committed team to run it.

The poll itself is not WD specifically, it's about NWN1 mods in general. WD was just the first that came up in chat. I guess Spider and Sand could dig another one if that turns out to be a general preference.

I wouldnt mind seeing a old NWN1 server being brought back, but not WD. That mod is a mess and had more DMs than Britney spears had breakdowns...

I would like to see TPI, DD, or TFN.

You also as I told you in chat need to specify this poll isnt just for WD but for seeing a new NWN1 server in general. You just wont see the point when someone tries to explain it to you that the poll is misleading after you vote you see your mentioning WD.

Note: spider's only mentioned WD cos thats what I volunteered to host, the vote itself is to do with interest in /any/ server being brought back (besdies the two active NWN1 servers still running). If you would like to see one or more NWN1 servers brought back, but not WD, then please vote yes and state your thoughts ;)

yes but WD wouldnt lure me back to NWN1. Whitehorn, VoLV or TFN could..

Any server that is compatible with 3.0 haks would be the easiest to work with. Whitehorn was or maybe still is being used as a campaign server.

Whitehorn was being used by the Sembia DM team to host some campaigns I believe so it should be the quickest route to a live server.

I guess for me the vote would remain no, but only because I've been given a vote. It doesn't really concern my in truth, given I no longer have NWN installed. Would love the energy of the team behind it to work on a NWN2 server instead of course, but heaven forbid such a statement be interpreted as kicking someone while they're down.

I'll have to agree with those above concerning more up-to-date mods..Whitehorn et al would likely get me back in nwn1.

But, given the choice between nwn1 and nwn2, I'll take nwn2, but I'd like to see Whitehorn up and running.

I said no, because i think more DMs would do more good than more servers. There's plenty of space to do things, just not enough folks to do them with.
There's a place I like to hide
A doorway that I run through in the night
Relax child, you were there
But only didn't realize and you were scared
It's a place where you will learn
To face your fears, retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind

Agree on both points, but voted yes

Reason being that sometimes doing something highly impractical, but new and interesting, will bring the vim and vigor needed to improve things for a whole group.

If I were to pick a server, I would say Whitehorn or Luskan. Whitehorn had some AT grumpiness when I played with it last, and Luskan's spawns need a good kicking, but the mods are new to most of our members and have minimal quantities of confusing ALFA canon (due to their short tenures), are overall very well made (due to the resources/techniques available during their building), and represent dangerous frontier areas that I think our current ALFA1 could use more of.

I voted yes. I am currently one of the PC's that is on the quest by the Sembia team that is based in WH. The server is wonderful, has a great feel, the team that built it really knew what they were doing. Please don't take the previous comment as a put down on any other server, that is not what is meant by it.

I also see above where some old players said they would return if WH went back up, and I would be willing to relocate my pc if the server pulled enought pc's in my play times.

Modules come up for campaigns, the active NWN1 base of players and DMs is small, but if we can shake up another 5 DMs and 10 players per server, I guess I'd be pleasantly surprised.

Making any "revived" server comparable to any of the current ones might be a tall order, in terms of maturity of scripted systems, risks (spawns), rewards (loot or too good to be true shops), etc.

Currently a few servers are used for campaigns now and again, Luskan and Whitehorn mainly. When a DM's around to supervise and notice "oh crap, this little warrior dropped a 20K weapon", all good, it gets fixed. If a 24/7 DM'ess environment, you run the risk of having a shopping mall server that folks beeline to, buy their half-price +1 sword, and go back to the "normal" server.

I guess could always see if that risk materializes with a little extra log scrutiny, but again, this wouldn't work at all without another 5-10 DMs and players keeping the server warm (much more likely to happen in the cold weather than in summer, lot of people have better things to do at the moment).
