A couple of hours in I am loving it.

VATS is much better than expected. Pipboy inventory system is a pain in the arse but what's new?

I'm not getting my copy until Friday. :(

Read a couple of reviews. Both are a bit conflicting over whether Fallout 3 has that stupid auto levelling of enemies from Oblivion that everyone hated. Both agree that it's not an FPS, so where your shots hit isn't based so much on aiming, which makes me sad.

Installing now!

Pass this game up I say! You damned hypnotized wasteland zombies. Do you not see a glorified oblivion when you see one?

Oh god it's so good. They actually pulled it off. I have bounty hunters after me and I beat a defenseless old lady to death with a lead pipe. I missed you, Fallout.

Edit: What the hell is my custom title? "Think he's funny." isn't a sentence. This narrows it down to non-native English speakers, TT and Danjubus. >:|

Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2 just arrived in my letterbox. I think my brain is about to explode.

I think Fallout 3 ranks as one of my favourite games of all time. I maintain that it feels an awful lot like an Oblivion mod, but that is probably more of a pro than a con to me. Auto levelling... I'm not sure if I have more trouble killing the bad guys because they're getting more health or because their equipment is getting better... I'm only level 8 or 9 at the moment, but I don't think it's too bad. Certainly not as bad as Oblivion got, anyway.

The FPS aspect is much better than I had expected from the reviews I had read. I only very rarely bother with VATS.

However...:
* Limbs and heads keep getting blown off too much. It was amusing the first couple of times, but every time I kill someone with a headshot, their head goes flying away. It's just a bit silly.
* I think fast travel should be a bit more like the old games fast travel, overland style with random encounters.
* It would be nice if the mouse wasn't so sluggish when using the menus and pipboy.
* It would be extremely nice if Bethesda stopped Fallout 3 from hard crashing all the time.

So far I love it a lot.

Granted, only got it at Friday and haven´t had time to powergame further than 4th lvl yet, but the atmosphere on Capital Wastelands is spot-on. Everything is perfectly as it should be.

However, I have to be critical. NPC´s are not that good.
First off, they´re pretty much all happyhappyjoyjoy when this mysterious stranger appear in their lives and welcome him with open arms. Yes, they use word fuck, but that´s hardly intimidating nor representing the kind of people they should be.

Possibility of going all psycho or asshole is there, but there´s hardly any choices of being intelligently evil or morally ambiguent by dialogues/interaction with NPC´s. Ok, I´ve ran in few options, but it is very few compared to Fallout2 and after reacting to these few in a way or other none of populace seemed to notice a shite. Which leads to my favorite gripe that Karma and Fame being different things and Fame being different thing in different locations was about the best invention ever in CRPG world ever, but it is abandoned now.

Summary:
Pros:
- It *is* Fallout. They did pull it off.
- Awesome atmosphere. Perfect graphics.
- Perfect feeling of post-nuclear world
- Addictive as bloody Jet
- Best game after Witcher that has been released after BG2
Cons:
- Non-reactive and too kind NPC´s
- Lack of distinction between Karma and Fame
- Level Cap ( Might be this won´t be too bad, but so far I have never played a game where I thought it was a good idea)
- Oblivionlike game crashes. ( DL´ng newest drivers on videocard reduced this a lot, but still occasionally on totally unpredicted places game freezes for like 5 mins and restarts whole comp then)

These are impressions after playing some 20 hours on weekend, though, so might change on some accords. I´m a kinda player that likes to stop to smell the flowers and then shoot the gardener if it nets bottlecaps.

Overall one hell of a game still. Fallout is Fallout and if you don´t know what I speak of you deserve a loving touch of Pancor Jackhammer.

I'm getting the Jefferson Memorial hard crash.

Which means all three of the quests, including the main quest, I'm in the middle of can't be continued.

I don't want to wander around the Wasteland randomly until after I've done most/all of the main quest... which means I'm stuck. I guess I'll go back to Far Cry 2 until Bethesda can be bothered fixing it. Which will probably take a while given Bethesda's track record.

It hasn't crashed one single time here. I'm level 16 now...

I'm not so sure its the game.

Download OCCT and run it for 30 minutes or so. It will stress your machine to see if its really stable.

Rubbish.

It is happening to far far too many people for it to not be the game. I could go through the cell to get to Rivet city, but can't enter the cell again. There is a suggestion that it has to do with the order in which locations are visited and quests are completed. Whatever is happening, the game is hard crashing every single time I try to enter that cell.
