Where does this information come from, how is it extracted (details please!) and what other information can be derived?
It comes from the nwnx4 db, table characters, column IsOnline. We simply count IsOnline = 1 and note ServerID.

Tons of info there, and we have plans on using more of it for various website purposes.

Hmm... if counting entries from a table, I wonder if there'd be a way to display detail of who was actually playing, possibly in terms of PC name, or if that's too hard due to vaults full of dead PCs, GSIDs?

I.e.,
The Silver Marches: 0
Baldur's Gate: 2 (Joe Von Fighterburg, Petey Wizardson)

Just thinking it could help with matchmaking / meetups a bit, if a guy knew he needed to bump into Joe Von Fighterburg and saw in the upper left corner that now would be a good time to spare a few minutes to game, hey, all good.
ALFA NWN2 PCs: Rhaggot of the Bruised-Eye, and Bamshogbo
ALFA NWN1 PC: Jacobim Foxmantle
ALFA NWN1 Dead PC: Jon Shieldjack

Have you tried holding your mouse over the server? I think that's exactly what you mean. :)

Ah, I'd noticed a pointer with a question mark on mouseover and clicked it uselessly, guess I was too impatient to see a floaty box, hah. Good work.

Relax child, you were there
But only didn't realize and you were scared
It's a place where you will learn

More awesomeness: AL has patched the nwnx4 code to update IsOnline on login now. Meaning much more accurate numbers, and less lag. Website updates every 10 minutes, and IRCbot is instant. These changes will be part of the next HAK update, and will thus automagically work on BG as well once released. Good work AL!

This is, by far, the best feature I've ever seen implimented on the ALFA webpage. Well done!

Out of curiosity, will this feature work with NWN1 if and when they get the server vault restored?

Coming soon:

Graphs with play activity over time.
Hopefully we can single out DMs, and do side by side comparison.

This should help us pinpoint exactly where we are on DM coverage in the various timezones over time.

Did i mention the IA-team rocks ?

No,- at least not using the same technique. Would require quite a bit of work,- that is time and effort that is better spent elsewhere priorities wise imo. Unless of course somebody comes along and just does it all.

Zic, if you or anyone from IA ever comes to Pittsburgh I promise that I'll buy you all the beer you can drink. Between the Players Online feature and all of the site updates you've been doing, you guys deserve it!

I'm looking into this (just out of interest - I may not stay interested enough to do something useful).

I need the IP address and port of an NWN1 server to test things on first, though. Any server will do, just needs to be online and have an ip address and port.

I don't have NWN1 installed anymore, so I'm going to need someone else to look one up.

I've decided I don't like this feature anymore.

It keeps telling me there are a lot of people online whenever I'm at work.

Just noticed tonight that we had double digits on both Live servers. Not sure if any DMs were on, but 25 players logged in at once is nice to see. 8)
