Much depends on just how savvy the kids are. Most programs maintain logs and caches; simply checking those is your easiest, but least reliable option. Another possibility is to close all ports but the essential ones, and then wait for them to start complaining. Both of these require you to know a lot more than they do, but at least they're free.

... I wrote one for the last company I worked for... but the tools cost something like $20k, so that may be a bit out of your price range.
Had really nice charts and stuff though.

Max, check with your cable provider if you get your internet through them. My cable company (Charter Communications) has free monitoring/antiviral software for subscribers.
