DM'ing a PC who had to roll d100 x 5 times during some very critical and intense RP that had a lot riding on the rolls... He was almost reluctant to roll...

Rolls over 80 were good, rolls over 90 great.

3 rolls in the 80-90 range.

1 roll in the 90+ range.

I was pleased with the first roll, surprised at the second, gobsmacked at the third, not surprised at the 4th (since i think his d100 must have been loaded by that point, each roll having been a "win").

Roll 5 was 65.

Made for a great session when the PC had his moment to shine. Tymora must have been blowing on his dice that night. (get your mind out the gutter)

Your hin obviously used DracoBeGone body spray and put a tasty piece of bacon in Gwindor's back pocket.

*note to self* Try to harvest the venom sacks from beasties like that. *faints from the poison*

Felt the need to revive this thread would do some good (stir up good memories, hopefully inspire folks to make new ones in the upcoming year!), so here's one:

Westgate Arena Fight hosted by the Quivering Thumb!

http://dustin.wikidot.com/quivering-thumb

In spite of many ALFAns looking down on some participants of this event as being too OOC (a paladin of Kelemvor participating in a deathmatch probably was a stretch), this event drew a lot of PCs from many different servers including PGers, er, luminaries like Hignar Ironstar and Aravilar, to the point that between Inaubryn's NPCs and the PCs talking smack, shouting encouragements/taunts from the peanut gallery, etc it really did feel like a 'full house'.

The fights were interesting more from a RP standpoint in true ALFA fashion, as none of the participants were uber PG builds using fancy shmancy high lvl feats or such; the two most effective combatants were around lvl 5 ish with nothing more earth shattering than Knockdown or Rage as their 'difference makers'.

Round 1 (fight to KO, not deathmatch):

Arlox the dwarf (played by Vendrin) used KD to good effect in defeating an unsavory fighter type from Sembia (forget his name, I remember my PC and he had a long standing dislike for each other though) who apparently wasn't *cough* disciplined enough to keep his feet. Arlox also had a very fun battle cry/voiceset.

Yakut (? sorry, terrible remembering names) big half orc barbarian with gentle soul (played by Valdimir, who later went on to become HDM of the last ALFA1 server standing, Sembia) handily beat down his friend, Arun the sun elf paladin of Kelemvor, and picked her up afterwards and apologized. Arun to her credit had a very nice voiceset and was only lvl 2. I think she gave the big guy a hug though that may be my memories playing tricks on me.

Corwyn Eskalas (my PC) versus future Hall of Fame ALFA PC Lakshmi! Lakshmi was a nasty, sexy hawt half drow rogue who'd fled the Underdark (began in one of our UD servers) and life as a sex slave, struggling to make her way in the surface world in Westgate using guile and sex appeal working for Samiir, the sleezy Untherese owner of the Quivering Thumb. Corwyn was a moon elf from Velethuil/Deepingdale and an all around good guy (just ask Loulabelle!) and a decent fighter with aspirations of dabbling in a bit of the arcane someday. There was much trash talking in the readying area below the arena before the fight between these two, lots of sparks flying!

They were both around lvl 4 or 5, and Corwyn wiped the floor with Lakshmi in a battle of the rather unoptimized as Lak's ab dual wielding just wasn't good enough to beat NWN1 Combat Expertise. After Corwyn knocked Lakshimi out, there were many calls from PCs in the audience for Corwyn to cut the wretched and hated (half) Drow's throat, but he resisted (though tempted briefly) and spared her life.

Round 2:

Yakutz vs Sembian fighter. Unfortunately for the Sembian the Half Orc's brute strength proved to be too much (I think Valdimir was overcompensating for his previous PC who died pathetically to a BG goblin), down goes the bad guy for the second time, he's 0 for 2 and the crowd is telling him he should find another line of work.

On the schedule was Corwyn vs Arun. These two were also friends (Arun, Corwyn, and Yakutzk were all from Shadowdale) and Corwyn didn't find the idea of beating up and humiliating his younger sister figure appealing. He turned down the fight and forfeited, and was banished to the preparation area under the arena to keep out of trouble.

Arlox vs Lakshmi. This was pretty one sided I'm pretty sure (I don't think I saw it as Corwyn was downstairs). Winner, Arlox the dwarven fighter.

Final round to determine the champion came down to a fight between Arlox and Yak, since Corwyn forfeited. It was pretty close as I recall (I think I did get to see this fight), but Yak's raged strength and some good rolls proved to be the difference, and the good natured half orc emerged as the new Westgate Arena Fight Champion ... also a good deal richer.

The event wasn't over however.

Samiir the owner of the Quivering Thumb had been working the crowd and the fighters, daring and promising higher stakes for any who would be willing to step back into the arena for a Deathmatch. Unexpectedly, Arun challenged the evil skanky half drow to dual to the death, and in spite of Corwyn's attempts to disuade her, she stepped into the arena to face Lakshmi while pronouncing Kelemvor's dogma with righteous indignation.

Lakshmi's contempt and hatred for the 'Yellow Elf' was as evident as Arun's for the Drowblood. Without taking her eyes off of Arun she demanded a shield, switching her tactics from the thus far ineffective dual wielding style to a rapier and shield combo. She'd already lost two matches, but with her life on the line... Lakshmi was nothing if not a survivor.

The half drow cut down Arun in cold blood, finishing her off without hesitation and snuffing the life out of Corwyn's friend. He nearly charged the half drow out for blood when he found out, but was restrained by the other fighters and threats from the owner of the Quivering Thumb. In the end, it had been Arun's own fatal choice.

So much fun this event, especially RPing Corwyn's horror, grief and anger. I really enjoyed all the participants' RP including the jeers and cheers from the crowd, and especially the trash talking with Misty's toon.

A few days later Misty/Lakshmi got her revenge when her master Samiir and she tag teamed Corwyn and knocked him out, stripped him near naked with plans to make him into a arena fighter slave. I had the bastard, managed to get a blade to his throat, but Lakshmi foiled it all! :D

It was the start of a not so beautiful relationship with the future Hall of Famer, one that took me to levels of intense storytelling that took my breath away at times, ending ultimately in tragedy for both PCs. I still smile when I think about it (though at the time there was much gnashing of teeth as well)!

Just to make sure credit goes where it's due... the Half Orc was called Yakuut and was played by Valdimir. :-) Also a good writer, though I think his work might be lost to forum shifts over time now...

Valdimir, right, heh. I remember seeing his first PC in action dying pathetically and thinking 'I'm not sure this guy's going to make it in ALFA'... lol I was wrong.

Virvaldin was the DM from SD that often DMed the Ducklings, doh... how could I forget?

Speaking of giving credit, here's the link to Misty's writeup of this event from Lak's perspective. It's a fun read, and her details are probably clearer than my memories.

That little trip drove RP on Shadowdale for at least a year. :-)
Glorfindel always felt a bit guilty that he hadn't gone along to help keep folks out of trouble.

*takes a bow*

To be fair, it actually was a series of two or three return trips to Westgate, a couple trips to Sembia, before the evil half drow finally got to SD (actually twice... shhhh). Lots of folks involved that made this so much fun... the caliber of RP was spectacular, most of it without DM coverage (except in Westgate)!

Then all hell broke loose of course once Stilgar got involved as DM.

p.s. Another ultimate highlight in ALFA from all this; I got to see a dorf ball up his fists in fury, tremble, and cry like a girl... courtesy of Maxcell. It was awesome.

OK, I followed the link to this thread and this thread is AWESOME.

*casts Raise Dead Thread*

So many memories of things forgotten in here. Names of folks I have not thought about in years, people and characters I loved, and a few I hated.

Fluff:
The Night of the Three Knives. I loved it, and I wasn't even there.
Thanks Fluff. That’s like, the best compliment ever.

Muse:
Then scaring the sh*t out of everyone else with Shae....
I can't say I was overly scared of Shae, but I loved that character – well, I/Sheyreiza had a crush on her anyway. Muse's Shae really didn't give two sh*ts about my Shey, however, so nothing ever happened. Alas. ;)

Another character I loved but missed out on really interacting with was Glorfindel, wvincenti’s PC. Our PCs would not have hit off well, but ... Glor was a cool character just the same.

Characters I was glad NOT to encounter IC (much anyway): Jarlen, Mashan Tain, and probably some others. By the time I got Sheyreiza up to the high-levels (like 14) I was no longer afraid of any PC except for Higgy, and honestly, it made the world boring.

Muse:
Mykayla going from lolth to eliestree and back again was much fun...
As I’ve said elsewhere, Shey’s encounter with Eilistraee (and the subsequent fallout, which took months to play out) was the most intense, best single experience of my time in ALFA. Thanks Muse.

@Creslyn: I remember the Constable’s tower too; I was not the primary DM, but as an ADM I was asked to help so I did – I don’t remember exactly what I did during that whole thing, but I distinctly remember the absolute PC carnage at the end. It was awesome. Congrats on surviving.

Stormbring3r:
I would say NWN1 DD first ever PC and land in a DM quest with drow and demons killing everyone.. Spent 4+ hours on the Fugue Plane RP'ing. On to second PC
Uh, sorry about that. I think you popped in right as the Night of Three Knives was taking place, and I couldn't take time out to do anything about folks in the fugue, as I was trying to handle three different groups of drow raiders at once. If I am recalling this correctly.

Stormseeker:
2003? has it been that long since my second pc died to that drow attack on dd.
Sorry about that too. 2003 eh? Wow I feel old. Seems I had it in for people with “storm” in their name. Actually, in the early days of the DD drow campaign, I made a point of messing with people after dark. I didn’t actually kill that many PCs, but word got out that I was slaughtering folks, and soon, not too many people on DDs roads at night. Good fun – and thanks for not holding a grudge, both of you.

DD:
Similar (but slightly different) was the first big event on TSM in ALFA NWN2. The crypts of Rivermoot had been fouled by undead and, rather than join together, the PCs rapidlly splintered into factions each trying to take credit for their victory and make the other look bad or take losses.

The Banites were quietly giving instruction to let the Helmites fall if they were injured. The Helmites were giving commands to their followers to ignore the order given by the Red Knight followers.

A party of like 15 PCs in an absolute power and leadership vacauum.
Ahem. Not a complete power vacuum. As you may (or apparently, may not) recall, when the arguments between the two factions threatened to paralyze our “little” excursion (of more than a dozen) my PC, Vellya Alfarsdottir, took the reins and led the group into the crypt. It was the beginning of her coming out of her shell. So there. You can find my write up of it in the “Rivermoot Saga” thread in the library. That was one of my fav moments of NWN2 ALFA.

@Ithildur: The arena fight you mention was legendary – it is one of the great in-game ALFA events I missed, and I really wish I had been there. It spawned so much awesome drama, and many kudos to Misty/Lakshmi for being the dark driving force behind much of it, and to Inaubryn for holding the event in the first place.

Several folks mentioned the last days of Sembia – that was where I retired Sheyreiza at, Ched Nasad having been destroyed and Shey having worn out her welcome in Menzo. It was a weird time; felt like ALFA was dying even though we were really just gearing up for NWN2. There were a few stalward die-hards left on Sembia though, and fortunately, they were sneaky evil people who saw a rogue drow priestess as something useful. It was fun, but surreal and weird – from my perspective, it was an ALFA version of the “Last Days of Disco." No offense to Sembia, but in retrospect, I wish Sheyreiza had died at the end of the War of the Spider Queen campaign - that would have been a perfect, literary end for her, but alas, it was not to be - I guess thats a little more like real life - some folks outlive their time.

Anyway, so many names, so many ALFAns and so many characters. This thread reminds me that ALFA is HUGE, or at least was. The vast majority of these “best memories” come from incredible adventures and toons I never played in or met, and that tells you something about how big and fantastic ALFA really is. Awesome. Thanks.
