Iiiiinteresting. Compare and contrast to XCOM: Enemy Unknown on Classic or Impossible Ironman difficulty, in 250 words or less.

Banner Saga "Hard" mode would = X-com Classic mode.

Please note the following differences.

* An X-com game could take many weeks. The Banner saga can be wrapped up in a few days. (The end of the game does not in any way finish the story. The world is still ending, and the caravan still screwed, Banner Saga 2 is being written (By the same folks who did the first one, 3 ex-bioware dudes)

* X-com classic auto-saves, those dead soldier-champs you nurtured, and just pinned all those medals to, hurt. The Banner Saga saves at the start of every "chapter". Of which there are 7. If you don't like a decision you made... you would have to reload back to then. (You can exit the game, and pick up where you left off, though).

* X-com puts you in a time-line (of escalating alien invasion), while allowing you to make decisions about how to face it (tech trees, soldier development, which mission to pursue). Banner Saga is essentially linear. The caravan will be underway regardless. Along the way there are preset, and random events that offer you choices. Some choices will be difficult to make with unfortunate consequences. What is interesting is that generally your guys cannot die in combat. They are just badly wounded (will take time to heal back to full strength). Where they can die (or leave) is out of combat, based on the decisions you make.

* X-com battles are squad based. Banner Saga battles the same, BUT the difficulty will, at times, be based on tactical decisions you make before hand, and the strength (and numbers) of the caravan. If your caravan has been battered silly (or morale is bad, or they've been eating bad shellfish and dropping like flies) then you will be facing more baddies.

* X-com had a huge budget, and massive team. The Banner Saga was done by 3 dudes with a limited budget. It shows. In length, and some repetition of art and such. It is also a very stylish game, a really great proof of concept I think, with flashes of brilliance. It won't keep you coming back like X-com might, but it is a very enjoyable way to spend a weekend.

* If X-Com is like a sandwich, then Banner Saga is like a fig. Different, interesting, but not something you would enjoy too much of.

Banner Saga has great story and lousy gameplay. XCOM has great gameplay and lousy story.

Mostly correct.
Though I enjoyed XCOM's story, minimalist and silly as it was.

Expeditions : Conquistadors.

Just finished this. Not a bad wee game. It was rather similar in gameplay to "The Banner Saga". Basic premise is... you are leading a group of conquistadors to the new world (Mexico area is where most of the game unfolds). Off to seek fame and fortune (at the expense of the natives). You choose your party (10 npc's) from a group of 30ish pre-made. One quibble here is the very obvious equal rights thing going on. Female npc's available for selection. Not very historically accurate, but okay, carry on.

Allocate points into a few basic skills for your guy, and off you go.

From there the plot unfolds. There are some obvious tasks you are assigned shortly after by a slight rail-roading plot, but you can deviate and go exploring.

NPC specific events happen every now and then where you get a little exposition on their back stories and motivations. Probably the most interesting part of the game for me.

7/10.

Conquistador was fun, but the game's atmosphere was sorely diminished for me the moment magic was overtly real. I don't think my immersion ever recovered from meeting the death god in the flesh.

I feel all isometric-ed out, after playing xcom, BG, banner saga, then this. Not a good sign with most of the upcoming games on my hit list being such.

Oh well, we'll see.

pragmatic (adj.)
The opposite of idealistic is pragmatic, a word that describes a philosophy of "doing what works best."
From Greek pragma "deed," the word has historically described philosophers and politicians who were
concerned more with real-world application of ideas than with abstract notions. A pragmatic person
is sensible, grounded, and practical.
