I feel the need...the need for speed!"
Tom Cruise may have said it best as he slammed the throttle forward in "Top Gun," but man as a whole has always strived to push the limits when it comes to speed.
The Internet is no exception as researchers at the University of Tokyo have made claim to breaking Internet speed records on the high speed Internet2 network.
Pushing the limits twice in two days, the researchers were able to send information at a rate of 7.67 gigabits per second and 9.08 Gbps over a distance of 20,000 miles. While this still leaves some room for someone else to break their record and reach the current theoretical limit of 10Gbps on Internet2, the researchers themselves are moving forward on developing an even faster service, 100Gbps.
That's right, you would be able to download the entire Lord Of The Rings trilogy in a matter of a minute or so...in HD.
Let's not forget how much porn you would be able to download....
Really, the whole idea of cueing would become obsolete...
This was on g4tv.com and there was some links somewhere on Yahoo.com as well. Just dont have the linky atm.
I've heard some US colleges have the Internet2 now, but dont know if this is true or not. I know the military has a super fast setup all their own that makes the current net look silly. Cant wait to have speeds this fast one day. Technology is awesome!

Last I heard Internet2 isn't a network. It's a consortium.
I think what you're talking about is the Abilene network. But I haven't been keeping track of it since I heard about it a few years ago. I guess you could call it the mudkips network for all I care. My interest will only be piqued when we actually get the download the porn at massive speeds and the record breaking WDM stuff becomes a common household thing.

Ontop of that, considering the Internet2 is a private network, they can do speed tests in optimal conditions. Load that down with the amount of traffic the internet currently handles and you wont be getting near those speeds. Faster than you currently can get, sure, but nothing like the record numbers they are putting out.
