Multiple Characters

OK ... I know this is probably shaking the foundation of some venerable pillar but ... I like playing more than one character concept. And it kind of stinks having to die or retire a PC to do it. I like playing the goodly types, but also enjoy getting my drow on in the underdark as well if you know what I mean ;) I know all the reasons against allowing multiple characters on the same server and guess I agree with them. However, since ALFA has (or will have) multiple servers is there any reason why a player could not have more than one character as long as they are on different servers? The condition could be that no two player/characters ever play on the same server ever. I don't see why this couldn't work.

I know we have the OAS server and the beta servers to play around with different concepts, but thay are usually kinda empty, and well, RPing alone can get boring real quick.

If one can DM on one server and play on another I don't see why playing different characters on two different servers would be a problem -- or even 3 or 4 on different servers for that matter. I believe we have players with characters on NWN1 and NWN2 servers with more than one character right now if I am not mistaken. Doesn't seem to be a problem.

Sometimes play with a particular concept gets a bit old or stale and you want to try something new for a while -- but don't necessarily want to give up on an old friend. I find that playing multiple concepts keeps them all fresh actually, and doesn't detract from their individual stories in the least. Sooooo ... as long as the twain shall never meet, is this something that others would like to see as well ... or not?

This is a concept that hits close to home. I agree with it, and the recommendation is a reasonable one to me. :)

That's what DMing is for - all the characters you want to play at your fingertips.

If we ever allow more than one character per NWN game is the time a lot of folks would probably go elsewhere. this place was always about one character, hardcore roleplaying and permadeath. I hope that never changes.

There is nothing inherently wrong with multiple characters, but people here seem to have an irrational dislike of them - I doubt this can be changed.

They are in fact an aid to low population servers - introducing variety, preventing players from burning out on a single character, allowing players to still log in should one of their characters become tied up in a DM campaign... it encourages people to play more.

The drawbacks are minor... players taking advantage of the possible exploits can be punished as if it were any other; dm concerns with handling so many... well, it isn't so different than those players that just can't seem to stop dying. (Stop dying! Argh!) And nonsense like "lol how can RP 2 ppl @ a tiem??" that I've seen brought up in the past should just be ignored.

In response to Misty: Yes DMing can provide some of these opportunities, I agree. But DMing carries with it time commitments and responsibilites that some players simply cannot swing. I say why limit creativity, and the opportunity for diverse expression through interesting RP? That is what we are all here for. Also my idea of DMing is to let the players you DM develop their stories with your help -- not for the DM to develop his character's story as you do in player RP. Its a different fix to me.

In response to Dorn: How does allowing for multiple characters make ALFA less hardcore or avoid permadeath? It just gives you more opportunity for hardcore roleplay from different perspectives and more chances to die -- permanently =) Take my drow example. Why would playing a drow on an underdark server, who is unlikely to ever reach the surface other than in a raid, conflict with playing a goodly cleric half way across the continent on another server?

Seriously, I would like to try to understand the reasons why people are against this concept. I am absolutely open to being convinced why this would be a bad thing. As I said, the rule would be not to ever have two characters play on the same servers. This avoids all (or most)metagaming concerns which are legitimate. If someone plays a character on NWN1 Sembia and a different character on NWN2 TSM are they any less a hardcore RPer? Certainly not. If they are then maybe we should prevent players from having characters on both platforms. *shrugs*

I suppose I could log on to another PW and play a different concept for a while and then jump back and forth between that PW and ALFA as some players seem to do. But why adhere to a "principle" that fosters that? Seems counterproductive.

And Mick, if your suggestion is that members of this community should avoid suggestions that might lead to derision or "flaming", well then, this forum, and all other suggestion forums should be deleted in their entirety If it was a heads up then thanks for the steaks, I'll get the brew =)

1) there are a ton of ways that this could go south fast with twinking, favortism, OOC knowledge, etc.

2) ALFA has been since its inception 1 PC rule Always. Since we have a new game they only allowed 1 PC per NWN game. I seriously doubt you will ever see multiple PCs ever being allowed here for the same game. It just isnt going to happen. I might be wrong and wake up one day and Paazin puts it to a member vote, but I just dont think it will ever take place.

People say they are bored and would like to try new concepts etc...well, we have always said the beta servers need help testing. If more people tested in their free time those servers would get closer to Live status. Its not what your looking for I know, but those servers need folks helping them out.

Just my 2 cents.

Pretty much this. It's a good, sensible idea but you will never see it happen in ALFA.

Actually, it was just a reference to another famous dead horse. A good ribeye would hit the spot, though.

Hmm. I can't seem to add a poll to this thread. Could a moderator please do so seeking all those in favor and all those against. I am not calling for some member vote or anything, just trying to assess interest of the community for or against.

*facepalms* Oops. I meant Danubus/Lusipher or whatever his name is. Not quite sure how that happened. Must be sleep deprivation. Sorry.

Fear is fear, and ALFA is paralyzed with fear. They fear that having more than one PC in ALFA will result in bad behavior. Well, considering all the bad behavior i can do with just one PC in ALFA, that won't show up in the 1984 reports, it seems rather silly to worry about all those things mentioned above that 'will' show up in the 1984 reports.
