Part III
Of Revenge and Imprisonment

It was a couple of days later when Soppi got out of her comfortable bed in a basic room of the opulent Unicorn, washed and dressed before heading over to the Dripping Dagger for breakfast. There, she saw the dwarf Shug talking to a man she didn’t know. After a brief hello she ordered a breakfast of rabbit and tater stew with cider to wash it down and sat down to eat by herself, still distracted by the events of the other day.

And then things got strange. A group of Waterdhavian guards burst in with a mage and quickly surrounded the confused hin. They were obviously on edge with their hands on their clubs, the mage with spell components already in hand.

Soppi looked at them and smiled her warmest and most innocent smile. “Hello” she said with her mouth full of rabbit before they spoke.

“Surrender your weapons and come with us.” They demanded.

Slowly she raised her cider to her mouth and washed down the rabbit. “What is this about?” Soppi asked.

“Surrender your weapons and come with us. Now.” Their grips tightened on their clubs, but Soppi could see that they were a little afraid of her, which she thought was a bit ridiculous. Not wanting to cause trouble, she sighed and nodded before handing over Horn and Blood Point and went along peacefully. The guards relaxed slightly after receiving her sword and bow, but still refused to answer her questions.

When they reached the guard house, she was taken down into the dungeon. All her things were taken from her, even her holy symbol, which she had made with her own hands, and her clothes, which were replaced with a set of rags that left little to the imagination. Despite their refusal to explain what it was regarding, she still went along, knowing that it was a mistake and that it would quickly be resolved. Even after being put in a cell and locked in she held on to this belief.

Later the next day she was visited by a watch wizard who told her she had done a very naughty thing and would be punished severely. He would not answer her questions about what she was supposed to have done and walked away shaking his head in apparent disapproval at her.

It was later that day when a kinder guard appeared and asked if there was anything she needed. She politely asked for her holy symbol back as well as some decent clothes instead of the rags provided and some books to read. He came back shortly with several books but told her that her other two requests had been refused. He also couldn’t – or wouldn’t – tell her why she was there and he quickly left.

Soppi settled down with a book on the history of Waterdeep and began to read.

Soppi waits in jail. And waits. And waits.

It was two days later and she was just finishing the last book when a dwarven guard came up to her cell and told her to stand back. She did as she was asked and he unlocked and opened the cell door. Then a human, a Magister by the looks of him, appeared in the entrance to the cell. He looked at her with distaste and ordered the dwarf to stand back as he pulled some sulphur from a pouch at his waist. The dwarf looked a little uncertain but did as he was ordered with a “Yes sir!”.

A magister appears

“I’ve got a banquet at the castle to attend, so let’s get this over with” said the Magister as he pulled some dung out of his other pouch and sniffed it. “Troll, I think”, he licked it and nodded. Soppi had seen that combination before and tensed in disbelief of what he was about to do.

“What about my trial?” She asked.

“There’s no time for a trial,“ was the response “They’re serving pastries at the banquet and I don’t want to miss it!”

“Stop this!” cried a voice from the corridor. Soppi had heard the voice before, but she couldn’t place it, and couldn’t see who it was from within her cell.

The Magister turned towards the voice then turned to the dwarven guard. “Who is this?” He demanded “And how did he get down here?”

The dwarf started stammering something out, but was interrupted by the voice, who she recognised as a man she had once seen in the Dagger as he walked into view. “You must stop this injustice immediately!”

“You are mistaken” chimed in another voice, an elven woman from the sound of it. “This is not the hin who committed the crime.” The owner of the voice moved into view and Soppi was sure she had seen the moon elf before, but could not place her.

The Magister turned to the woman, “You said a filthy hin killed the elf, Jain’n, and here we have a filthy hin, what is the problem?”

As soon as she heard it her first thought was Amy, what have you done?, quickly replaced by anger to hin being referred to as filthy “I object!” she cried out, speaking for the first time since the murderous execution was interrupted.

“Be quiet!” Screamed the Magister, and Soppi glowered at him.

“Yes, a filthy hin committed the crime, but not this filthy hin.” The elven woman replied to the Magister,

“Excuse me?” asked Soppi, starting to get agitated.

The man who arrived to save her turned and gently indicated for her to be silent. Soppi pursed her lips, displeased at being treated like a child by the man, but she remained quiet.

“You just said you were a witness, in the meeting room” The magister said to the elf, pointing up the corridor.

“Exactly, she did not do it, she is not a ghostwise hin” was the haughty reply from the elf.

The reason for her imprisonment is revealed at last!

“Are you all willing to swear under pain of death to this?” asked the magister, with a slight glint in his eye.

They swore upon it, much to the magister’s annoyance. He had no choice but to declare her innocence and command the dwarf to take care of her release before leaving to see to the pastries in the Waterdeep Castle banquet without so much as a word to Soppi.

After he had left, Soppi approached the man and thanked him for his assistance her. She said that she had been worried that she might have to defend herself, and he laughed as if he thought she was joking.

The dwarf led her to her things and she gathered them together, discarding the rags and putting on her clothes. She briefly ran into Carion on her way out and told him what had happened before explaining why it was ridiculous to believe she would ever kill Jain’n

She complained that she didn’t even receive an apology from the
Magister, and demanded that one be given to her for the unjustified four days in jail without so much as an explanation and the racism of the situation. Carion apologised to Soppi on behalf of the Waterdhavian guards, but that wasn’t enough for her. She wanted one from the magister himself. After it was made clear by Carion that she would be unlikely to receive one, she left in anger.

An apology is expected

She left the guard house and headed towards the Unicorn where she treated herself to the most expensive room they had. Soppi sat for a long time in the large bath washing off the filth of jail and injustice and then sat in front of the lit fireplace before she got tired and retired to one of the large and comfortable beds where she fell asleep straight away.

It was early the next morning, but the North Gate was still closed. Soppi guessed no merchants, farmers or travelers must have yet arrived at the City of Splendors that morning, or the gates would have surely been left open for the day to welcome those who wished to spend their gold in the city taverns and markets. She approached the gates, giving the many guards inside the gate a wide berth, still not fully trusting them after her experiences with the "law enforcement" of the guards and magisters from the past tenday. She only had to duck slightly to get under the closed gate and a second later she was outside. She spared a few seconds just staring at the gate and thinking of all that had happened behind it before she sighed softly and turned around to head north for the long trip back home. On the trip, her mind wandered back to the events of her latest and strangest visit ever to Waterdeep.

That's it.

OOC Notes:
1. I don’t know what Jain’n said to Darius to set him off because I crashed to Windows just before it happened, and by the time I logged back in it the mess had begun.

2. I had no idea what was happening when I ended up in jail. I was just sitting in the Dagger, went outside for a smoke and when I came back to my computer Soppi was in jail and I had a tell from Thrasy to PM him when I would have time to “play it out” and I could log out now. It was very confusing. We later decided on how I got there.

3. It was several days later when I got pulled into the DM only area and was surrounded by not only all the Waterdeep DMs, but Squamatus as well. It was both very confusing and harrowing. Thrasy seemed a bit annoyed and asked me where I dumped the body, which only served to increase my confusion. I was like “Huh?” Then he clarified by asking what I did after killing Jain’n and it clicked. I said I didn’t kill him and Arri piped in saying there was no way Soppi would be able to kill Jain’n, so Thrasy checked the log and came back very apologetic (all hins look the same to him, apparently). After the cloud was lifted I saw the humour in it and thought it was all very funny.

4. Thrasy offered to make it all OOC, still apologetic, but I thought it would be better to keep Soppi in jail and just play it out as a case of mistaken identity, which is kind of what it was. :)

5. I regret that both part 2 and part 3 happened at all. I liked all three characters (even Darius OOC - it was refreshing to have an evil character who wasn’t out to cause as much damage, mayhem and death as possible), and I regret that any of them died. Unfortunately some did and I felt it made a sufficiently interesting enough story to post it here.

6. Part 1 may initially seem completely unrelated if you’re not paying attention, but part 2 wouldn’t have occurred without part 1. And if part 2 didn’t occur, part 3 wouldn’t have occurred either.

Tragic events, quite dramatic. I can't believe noone asked Mr Duncan who killed his character. Anyway:
(even Darius OOC - it was refreshing to have an evil character who wasn’t out to cause as much damage, mayhem and death as possible)
Never really met that kind of evil, except in DM's. Most evil PC's I interact with, are quite incidius and not too obvious about.
I think it was a very exciting read and well written NickD! Thanks for sharing it with us.

Joos, the server at that point was quite unstable, both drama and tech wise.

Well done!!! ... except for that part about the dashing and daring Dash Darefoot. Every good lady needs a little rascal. :D

And I'm sure Soppi's father can be bri... errr, convinced of the better qualities of a Lightfoot.
