The Mis-Adventures of Waterdeep: Selviel's View

Post by Amar »

Selviel seems to run into so many odd situations in the deep Ive decided to put them all down as they happen. At first I was just gonna keep a running record of it all at home. But then i figured why not do this?

Entry 1:

Selviel awakes from a good night's rest at Safehaven and walks downstairs to find the bar empty. She wanders the streets of the Adventurer's Quarter for a little while. Then remembers that she was hired long ago to rescue babies from goblins in the sewer. She thinks to herself "Theres no way I can take on a horde of goblins by myself.

But I could at least locate where they are hiding and leave." So Selviel ventures into the sewers of waterdeep. Clenching her nose at the smell, she walks along the paths and catwalks of the sewers, through twists and turns, finding no sign of life at all. Just before she is about to give up, she turns the corner: to come face to face with an ant the size of a full grown Uthgard. She screams wildly and quickly sinks and arrow into its neck. And as it falls to the ground she sees a second one, stepping right over its comrades body. She is frozen in terror for and instant as the ant sinks its teeth deeply into her leg. She regains her composer and tries to sink another arrow, backing up towards the wall. She is still to shaky however and misses. She gulps, and screams out for the assistance of her beloved Goddess Akadi, and lets loose another arrow, narrowly avoiding a second chomp from the creature. Her arrow digs into it's head and it falls over limp.

She prays to Akadi for healing, and decides to trudge on. She goes no more than 10 yards more, when she sees a vile dark dwarf watching for any intruders. She sneaks up, and lands an arrow square into his neck. She moves around the corner. But steps directly under a lantern! She looks around, and two more of these dark skinned dwarves spot her. She tries to run, but one of them quaffs a potion and runs much faster, catching up easily and chopping her once on the arm incredibly hard. She manages to lose him in the tunnels ahead though, and finds her way to the surface.

Selviel limps and hobbles back toward Safehaven, leaving a trail of blood behind her. She reaches the door and collapses in a pool of blood. A large man happens across her, and heals her injuries slightly. She sits up and thanks him. The man introduces himself: he is a barbarian from the clan Red Tiger. After a short conversation, Selviel picks herself up and leaves to get some rest and healing. Upon her return, Selviel finds her friend Kalina in the tavern. She stays out of her way as she appears to be busy at the moment. Kalina leaves with a small group of people to the guard post.

Selviel remembers something and follows shortly thereafter. Selviel enters the building and awaits her turn with the Armar Kalina. After the others have left, Kalina helps Selviel to sign on with the watch. After her briefing, Selviel heads back to safehaven, and ends up in a polite conversation with a man dressed in blue robes.

A group of adventurers is to head into the sewers just as she was to about to go off duty, so she decides to join them. The group spends perhaps an hour in the sewers, fighting goblins, mangy animals, and serpents. No children were recovered however. Afterwards she heads to Mother Tathlorn's with a few party members for healing and rest.

Selviel returned to Safehaven and began speaking with any adventurers there about taking down a shadow thief in town. After a while they had a good sized team assembled for the job. They were to meet at the Dripping Dagger Inn when they were ready. On reaching the Inn, Jarrin (the shadow thief in question) walks into the bar, and ignores Selviel's notification of arrest. The party rushes outside, unable to find him. They search around the corner of the building, and Wolf ( a member of the party) turns to speak with the rest. Selviel barely noticed Jarrin sneaking up on Wolf, but it is too late before she can say anything. Jarrin slices Wolf across the neck from behind, and Wolf falls dead to the ground. A chase ensues after the thief and murderer. And Raisor manages to cut him off and take him down. Sel walks over to the body and pulls out her longsword, slicing off the head and stuffing it in a bag.

She asks Locke, a priest of Torm to help carry Wolf back to the Plinth. Sel collects her reward on the way, and they go to meet with the priestess of Torm, to see if the gods would allow Wolf's life to be spared. Praise the gods our prayers were answered! Wolf's living (however nude) form rose before us and Sel sung the high praises.Ecstatic with joy, Selviel and Wolf return to the Haven, wherein a drinking game ensues, leaving Selviel and Wolf passed out on the floor. A couple of elves kept them in good care for the night. And all was well.

NOTE: many things are shortened because I really really want to sleep...

Ok... this one is a bit wierd... and im not sure how to put a lot of it. So ill give it my best shot.

Entry 2:

Seviel wakes and stretches. The birds singing outside her window, she smiles out to the beautiful blue sky.
"For once, it isnt raining." She says to herself. She pulls on her pendant of Akadi, admiring it. She open her dresser and peers at her options. Theres always the Ocean Robes, they are lovely... but she isnt quite used to the feel of them yet. She sighs, and pulls out her customized Watch Uniform. She dresses, and heads out the door, almost forgetting to lock it behind her. She waves to Madame Garah on her way out, and heads toward Safehaven to see if anyone of her friends are around.

On reaching the door to the ever-popular tavern, she runs into Kalina and Ymrik - the Monk of Lathander - just leaving. Smiling, Kalina asks Selviel if she is on duty. Sel smiles and explains her comfort issue. Kalina nods in agreement.
"Sel, I have information that both you and Ymrik need to hear" Kal says to her.
"Of course, Kalina."

Selviel follows them back to Kalina's room at Madame Garah's. Kal checks the hall for listeners before talking. The conversation that ensues, a story of a power hungry man, who may be one of the masked lords of waterdeep. The legend of a great king, and the Book of Knowledge that gave him some sort of grand power. According to legend, the King opened the book, read it, smiled and walked away. Kalina has come to believe that the book answered a sort of riddle or joke for him. The riddle, or song if you will, that was found in his tomb.

"With the song as my guide and the sun in my eyes
I sought the Great Golden to get her advice
All and Nothing, Truth sharper than any blade.
with truth before, me how can I be afraid."

Cryptic, she thinks.
"I suppose you could fear a lie," says Selviel "If truth is all that surrounds you."
"Yes," replied Ymrik "but the first line tells us to consider the riddle literally, not metaphorically." They pause and think for a few minutes.
"Do we have any idea of this 'Great Golden'" Sel remarks.
"Perhaps the Great Golden Dragon to the east..." replies Ymrik "After all, the first line suggests we follow the sun, and the sun rises in the east."
"All and Nothing... that stumps me" says Sel.
Ymrik offhandedly replies "Perhaps it means the Book...it contains all knowledge..."
Suddenly Kalina's eyes widen and she leaps forward with excitement "Ymrik thats it! The book contains all knowledge, but all knowledge is nothing at all! Thats what the book told him." Selviel stood there silently, wide-eyed in astonishment at the simplicity of it all. "It must be that knowledge that gave him the peace of mind to rule so wisely all those years!"
Ymrik smirks "It seems you have taken a liking to my idle remark."

With that settled, the trio has only one piece of the puzzle left in order to guide them where they must go to foil the dastardly plot. They decide that the dragon they seek would have to be closer. As the riddle does not say when to follow the sun. The west is all water, and the east is very far from the kingdom the legendary man once ruled. As well, it is noted that if you follow the sun for an entire day, then you end up right back where you started. Selviel changes as to not draw attention, though she doesnt quite understand how her vibrant blue and elegant dress draws any less.

They seek out the help of Lathander's clergy, as Golden Dragons are a preffered messenger of the Sun God's. The priestess of the temple points them to a man named Garn`mo, who lives near the Bloody Fist in the docks district. They travel there quickly. On theyre way, a fully armed half-orc is spotted running south. Kalina notes it, and questions a passerby. Letting it go, they approach Garn`mo's house. Garn'mo is an acclaimed expert on dragons, and has spent hist life researching them. If anyone would know of a golden dragon closer than the one in the east, it is him.

Noone answers the door when Sel knocks on it. So she knocks again and calls out. Kalina seems worried now... she bursts open the doors and walks in. Inside there is a trail of blood, leading to the body of their expert. He has been beaten to death with a whip. He is surrounded by papers, a book he was working on no doubt. Kalina remembers the half-orc, and runs out to alert a watchman. A few moments later, Kalina returns and a Silver Horn is sounded in the distance.

The three examine the house for clues. After a good time of searching, the papers are gathered, and the monk sets to work examining them. He find that it is a book on dragons in the region. a page is missing however. The page where golden dragons would be. He attempts to get a glimpse at what was written on the page using an odd technique with chalk and the pages on either side of it. He fails to find anything.

So they go to Olophin to see what the guard has found. At this point in time, Olophin has no news. They go to change back into their watch uniforms, then check in with Olophin again. And this time he has terrible news. It seems that 8 watchmen, an entire patrol, found the half-orc. But they were beaten unconscious. The half-orc only used his bare hands and his whip a few times. The trio decides to track him with caution.

But as they are about to head out of the city a man is found to be selling guard uniforms. He is confronted and draws his weapon, apparently panicking. He ran in fright out of the city. Kalina, Selviel, and their new companion Carion, chase him down. He continues running for quite a distance until Selviel shoots at his legs with an arrow, she misses. He turns, and fires back. A fight ensues, taking them all the way to the bridge north by the caravan encampment. Here the man laid on Kalina a powerful blow, and she fell to the ground unconscious.

Selviel was catching up just then, and watches her friend fall to the ground, she switches to her sword so she may subdue the man, but he swirves and dodges all of her swings. When she fails to hit him many times, she turns and runs a good 10 yards away. She drops her longsword and pulls her bow back out, turning around she lets an arrow fly, hoping to catch him in the arm. She manages to suceed. But he moves up to her quickly. She tries to shoot at his leg, but becomes frightened and loses her aim, hitting him in the chest with the arrow at point blank range. She stares in shock as his eyes roll back and he falls to the ground. She quickly checks him, and finding him to not be dead, she prays to Akadi to heal the man to make certain he does not bleed to death.

As she is praying, Kalina runs up to her from the distance, Carion - a Devote man of Tyr - close behind her. She smiles, knowing Carion has healen her fallen comrade. Kalina checks the man's pulse, and binds his ankles together. Carion resusitates him to consiousness. Selviel smiles, and Kalina makes her arrest. Though the aid of the guard is needed to take him in. Carion and Kalina follow to the Castle to await trial. And Selviel returns to get the man's stash of armor. Selviel gets a hin by the name of Freddick to help her carry it all, and a man shes seen many times in many different looking robes enchants them to be strong enough to carry it all for a price of 10 crowns. They hurry themselves to the castle, and sit in trial. The trial does not take long, both sides say their piece. And the man was found guilty. The man-Brenden Silverhawk was the name he gave in court- was sentenced to a month of jail time, a fine of 400 crowns, and confiscation of the armor.

Giving up persuit of the half-orc by now. The three go their seperate ways. As Selviel leaves the castle though, she runs into a man. They have a brief chat. It seems he is a follower of Akadi. Well.. not quite, He follows a god of the sky, but his god of the sky is the same being as the goddess Akadi. It is a hard concept to explain, but the two gods are one being, yet still seperate entities. She smiles and says farewell to her brother, and heads for Safehaven. She runs into a fellow Sy-Tel on the way there, and speaks with him a moment to learn his nature. Dissapointingly, he is like most of thier kind, and she walks away sadly.

She spends some time in safehaven, and ends up speaking with a well-versed half-orc named Blur. During their conversation Dolen -and elven archer- runs in and tells everyone interested in saving waterdeep to go outside. Selviel runs outside to find Carion, S'ril -a dark skinned human girl-, and Anna -a strange girl that she only knows through Kalina-, and asks Carion what is happening. Carion says that the undead are stirring inside blackwell. And selviel quickly runs off to gather her things. She comes back, and they head to the temple of Tyr for support and information. The priest gives them all holy water, ghostroot, healing potions, and restorative potions. He offers them 2000 crowns when they return.

The group; now consisting of Carion, Selviel, S'ril, Anna, Blur, Dolen, Erwin -a quiet man-, Lino -a strong warrior from Triboar-, Julia -a girl who seems quite rougish and uses a bow-, and Taldar -a quiet priest of presumably Tyr-;journeyed to the well... and found zombies crawling out of it as they approached. "Well, at least we know we're in the right place." Says Selviel. They entered the well slowly. On entering, they found, wouldnt ya know it... vampires. Battles ensued around every corner, and in one, Anna fell.

But hold! She was miraculasly saved? THE GODS! THEY BROUGHT HER BACK! HURRAY HURRAH! They continued farther, the weight of the vampire's strikes clinching their souls in fear. Through the dark, wet corridors they walked. Never managing to turn a corner without fear of finding another dead one hunting them. They at last came to a room filled with their coffins. They fought a few, but others began to appear from nowhere, and less than half the party found themselves able to even harm them!

Many ran for their lives. But Anna, S'ril, Selviel, Carion, and Lino stayed to fight. Lino fell in combat, but was brought from the edge of death by Carion. As Carion revitalized him though, he was struck from behind and fell. Again, a shining beam of light, and the heavens had saved him. Sel and Anna ran, assuming the others would follow. And Lino had already left. As they ran up the stairs, they found the halls flooded with vampires again, they quickly jumped into the shadows to aboid being seen, and snuck to the stop. On the way... they saw the bodies of almost all their comrades.

Selviel fell to her knees at the top, mourning the death of her friends. She suddenly stands and yells that she is going back after Carion and S'ril. And rushes headfirst into the well. She sneaks back past the Vampires, and comes up to Carion and S'ril. But standing next to them, perfectly unharmed, are all the people who had fallen moments ago. Carion wished to press on, dispite impending doom. And Selviel helped lead the others topside. Carion and S'ril were exchanging words. And many pleaded for Carion to leave the well.

He reluctantly agreed, and they all went their seperate ways, though Carion, Dolen, Selviel, and S'ril returned to Safehaven. Wether it be from their brush with death, the sight of their friends dying, or from tasks not complete. Noone escaped the well that night without being deeply wounded, yet they all escaped without being harmed. Carion stood by the fire, glaring and balling his fists, staring deeply into the flames. S'ril watched with concern over Carion. Dolen sat trying to make S'ril cheer up. And Selviel, sat singing to herself a soothing melody of the woodlands.

"When in the springtime of the year
When the trees are crowned with leaves
When the ash and oak, and the birch and yew
Are dressed in ribbons fair

When the owls call the breathless moon
In the blue veil of the night
The shadows of the trees appear
Amidst the lantern lights

[chorus begins]
We've been rambling all the night
And sometime of this day
Now returning back again
We bring a garland gay
[end chorus]

Who will go down to those shady groves
And summon the shadows there
And tie a ribbon on those sheltering arms
In the springtime of the year

The songs of birds seem to fill the wood
That when the fiddler plays
All their voices can be heard
Long past the woodland days

[chorus]

And so they linked their hands and danced
Round in circles and in rows
And so the journey of the night descends
When all the shades are gone
"A garland gay we bring you here
And at your door we stand
It is a sprout well budded out
The work of our lord's hand"

[chorus]"

Song copyright Loreena McKennitt. Yes I stole it... but i love that song...

NOTE: Sorry if things get a quite short-winded at the end... that was a really really long one. And i wasnt certain how to explain a lot of it in character.

One thing...for the love of god, please break this into readable paragraphs :D

Seriously, it is way too hard to follow when you have 1 screens worth of continuous text.

Well... its now as close to paragraphs as bad literature can be. I seperated them by the idea that was running them.

Selviels days of Mis-adventuring are over. She tried to save the city, and what does she get? Feet full of spikes and a large wasp stinger in the back.
